Chkdsk deleted some data on external

Suddenly, Windows XP erased half of my files (all kind of) on the external during a disk checking at startup..!
The disk worked fine until then.... and i haven't done any operational action until..

Just to say, i read this thread:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2215622

and i have these questions:

What to do exactly?
What program do you use to recover your files from this?

Thank you!

First off, don't write anything to the disk. If you have a spare drive, it's best to image the drive, and work on the created image to prevent damage. I use the TestDisk suite. It can be found in the PartedMagic disc, which will also give you tools to create your image. Read the documentation before you start. It's not the most user friendly software, but it works.
