Chkdsk corrupts NTFS partition on W2K install

This partition is one I use for storage, not OS. I created it in w2k, then tried xp, then recently went back and reinstalled w2k. During the install of windows 2000, chkdsk started and took a long time working over this partition. It took over an hour and a half for whatever it did. I finally get into windows 2000 and try to get some things out of one of several ghost images I have on the partition, and ghost explorer tells me "not a ghost image file". PDF files come up as corrupted or invalid. Image files come up as invalid. Everything lists as it should (no files lost) but every single file is somehow corrupted. I didn't use any compression or security settings on this partition (or at all).

Essentially I have 18 gigs of waste at this point. Tried some recovery tools, but they all recover as invalid.

Does anyone have any idea what happened or how I could get any of this data back? Thanks in advance.

What SP level for W2K? The XP NTFS volumes are newer than W2K and require an updated NTFS.SYS on the 2k boxes.

I installed w2k with sp4 slipstreamed. Also, there are several other partitions on the drive that went untouched by chkdsk and the data is fine on them.
