chkdsk always starts with winXP, how to disable?

Hello folks,

i have a bit of a dilemma, the "chkdsk" utility always starts up when winxp pro is loading, it states that drive d: has to be checked for inconsistencies and proceeds to scan drive D: (I have 2 partitions, c: and d:, D: is music/ movies, games etc., c: is mostly system stuff and programs etc). The hard drive is new and has been working splendid (a western digital 800jb), so I very much doubt its failing. I tried running disk defragment on drive d:, but it tells me that chkdsk has been scheduled to run on that drive and to please run "chkdsk /f". When I run chkdsk /f the command prompt asks me if I want to schedule a chkdsk at the beggining of my next boot-up, and i say yes. But each time I try to defragment drive d: it repeats the above "chkdsk /f" prompt regardless of how many times i restart the computer (I can run defrag on the c: partition with no problems). How do I unschedule a chkdsk from running at the beggining of the boot so I can run defrag?(aside from tampering with the registry) Why would chkdsk permanently be scheduled to run each bootup? I never set it at that, could it be a virus or 3rd party program that screwed things up? Please if anyone knows how to unschedule a chkdsk please tell me how (its not in the scheduled tasks folder). thank u bacinater, I've used that command on your link but it seems like a temporary fix. I did a system restore to before I installed the via mini port drivers, as this chkdsk prob coincided with the same time I installed them, but I still get the same problem. This does'nt seem software related, but is it possible that a hard drive like the wd 800jb would start failing after only 3 months? I doubt it, but can't seem to find any other fault, or maybe its just winxp acting funny due to another program? It's odd that whenever I try to defrag drive d: it tells me a chkdsk has been scheduled and therefore can't defrag (as per my previous post), any one else have any info on this? I'm getting desperate here as I know this problem might develop into something nasty. I'm worried windows might be trying to tell me something but running chkdsk each startup. Are there any other programs that check if theres something wrong with my harddrive or that defrag the hard drive aside from the winxp utilities?(kinda like a 2nd opinion?) thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried to defrag in "Safe" mode???

well, even in safemode i can't defragment the d: drive and it still states that it can't because "chkdsk" is scheduled to run yadda yadda. guess its time for a good old format I'm surprised no one else ahs encoutnered this problem, just me? Well thanks again, and cheers.

Start - program files - accesories - system tools - schedulded tasks.
Maybe you have chkdsk in there, and assigned as maintenance?

If not, im stumped.

Formatting the drive may not do it. Where is that start command coming from? (The 64K question) If that is from some hidden file on c:, it still may want to run it when your done.

Doing a little looking around in the windows 2000 help file, from the start menu, and looking up chkdsk, I noticed the next entry was chkntfs. In the overview for that, it talks about being able to schedule it to run at the start up with the /c switch and some other switches to say which drives to do. Is this running some how as a service on startup?

Did the format work? If not there are a couple of links to articles in this thread, that is dealing with the same issue.

thanks redbeard! i've postponed formating till i buy my new a7n8x mobo, will do a complete reformat of c: & d:, but that link u described is exactly what my problem is, i can't defrag and it states that chkdsk is set to run. i've just disabled chkdsk on drive D: for now, but will fiddle around with those articles to see if it works.
