I have like 9 gigs of chk files just sitting on my hard drive loaded with information that I would like to restore. I'm running a Windows 2k system and I'm just curious on what I should do to get all this stuff back. Thanks a lot!

now it seems as if they're all real files, just renamed into their check format. I can play the MP3s in there, but that's pretty much it. Are there any utilities out there to figure out what type of file something is? Thanks a lot!

These aren't necessarily complete files; they're just chunks of recovered data. You're unlikely to get much back, unless you're looking for pieces of word processing documents or something, in which case you can simply rename them all to .txt files and search through them for what you're looking for...

The funny thing about this situation though is that all the files actually do work. All the check files that were mp3s actually play in winamp and the ones that were jpgs actually show up as pictures. But is there any program out that that determines what type of a file something is? Thanks a lot!
