"Chirps" Coming from non-operational CD-Rom--Any Ideas?

I have had this 48X cdrom for about 6 months. Yesterday when I attempted to open a cdrom, all the drive did was atempt to read the cdrom, but it would not work. After restarting, I opened the case up and could hear a "chirping" sound coming from the cdrom whenever it attemped to read the cd. I dont think it did this before, but anyway, it just doesnt work. In Sisoft Sandra 2001 it could not communicate with the drive. Any thoughts? Is it busted? If so can it be fixed?

Thanks.

It's prbably time to replace the drive. Does BIOS detect the device? On your boot screen, you should see something pertaining to the CDROM. IF BIOS sees it, but no programs can communicate with it it is probably dead. They are really not worth fixing. Is there a little hole in the front of the drive? If there is, you can straighten a paper clip out to push the drvie door open and retrieve your CD. If not, you can use a small screwdriver to gently pry the door open to get your disc. Hope this helps.

can you hear the disc spin up?
my roomate's dvd drive wasn't reading anything, and it wasn't making the normal spin up sounds (no chirping though). So my other roomates opened the thing up and clean all the dust out and it started working again. so who knows maybe you can try that? just don't look into the laser 🙂
