Chipsets?

Hi! I'm looking forward to buy a new computer soon to replace my Pentium 4 1.7 GHz and TNT 2!

I've read about the new P35 chipset, which is quite good and rather unexpensive. But I'm worried about the fact that this chipset is obsolete when compared with the G35.

So, should I wait for the G35 or should I go right now with the P35?

P35 is essentially the same as G35, the difference being the integrated graphics in G35 (Does G35 even exists, or is it G33?).

It might be worth waiting for X38 though, with 2xPCIe x16 slots, if you are interested in running 2 Video Cards. It will also support new PCIe 2.0 standard.

Okay. I know the X38 should come out in Q3 2007, but does anybody have a more precise release date (like, for instance, late August/September)

What's up about PCIe 2.0? Are the G80 (8800 series) compatible with PCIe 2.0?

About X38, it will not be SLI-compatible, even though there's the possibility to run two GPU?!

last I heard was that some x38s may make late August but September is more likely for most.

As for SLI it's all down to gfx driver support - e.g. Foxconn have said that their X38 will do SLI because they plan to release a driver for it.

Is it really worth it to wait that long for X38 or P35 is enough as it is!?

Right now, I'm not looking for SLI, and just planning to buy 1 GeForce 8800 GTS.

P35 is enough as it is, IMHO.

Even PCIe 1.1 is not fully utilizing the full bandwidth of each lane with the most powerful Video Cards on the market today. If you were to wait for 2.0, it's like waiting for DX10 games. The promise is there, but fruition is far, far away.

Get a nice ABIT IP35 Pro (when back in stock) and you'll be set for another 6 years.

sounds nice in theory, but in reality boards die after 3 yrs or so.. my Abit IC7 that I got in 2004 is semi-dead, and numerous others.

I know, but look, he is coming from P4 1.7GHz Willamette, released, I believe, in 2001.

So he is a "long time user". On the second thought, perhaps he should wait for X38 with PCIe 2.0, to further "future proof" his machine.

I definitely agree with you about 3 years' longevity of heavy "used/abused" boards, but having used ASUS and Asrock, I am impressed with reviews and features of ABIT boards.

I love that little LCD for the error codes on the IP35 Pro, and the "continuous" heatpipe from the SB through the NB and beyond looks very reassuring as a cooling solution.

I think my next MB will be ABIT...
