Chipset?

Would someone explain to me the reason behind "Chipsets" being listed as a category by AnandTech? This is a serious question and not an attempt to "put down" or "criticize". I really don't understand.

There are sections devoted to CPU, MOTHERBOARDS, VIDEO, AUDIO, and STORAGE. I understand those categories because I can buy any one of them separately. But the CHIPSETS category has me confused. From reading the associated articles it seems the chipsets are part of motherboards. Why do we look at CHIPSETS as a separate category? Shouldn't it just be part of the MOTHERBOARD analysis?

He's talking about the new main page.

It's nice to see the chipset section since most motherboard purchases are based on the chipset... at least for me. For example, I wanted an onboard video for my next motherboard, so I searched for KM133 rather than go through the motherboard manufacturers and check to see if it had onboard video.

OK, then my understanding is correct, that is, chipsets cannot be acquired by themselves but only on specific motherboards that use them.

I see the logic now. Find the chipset that has the features for which you are looking and then find a motherboard with that chipset.

Thanks for the explanation, Shmorq. 🙂

Davegod75, Shmorq is correct...I'm referring to the new AnandTech Front Page and not the forums. BTW, you now access forums through the "Community" link...it is no longer titled "Forums".
