Chipset roadmap - what will replace the P55?

Hello,

This may sound like an odd question but is there any place to find a chipset roadmap? I see plenty of processor roadmaps but I can't find any chipset roadmaps. I realize the P55 is a new chipset but it seems like it has been gimped for some odd reason.

Anyone know what will replace the P55 or have links to information on that?

no it just came out.

If anything the X58 might get a revision, but thats only when SATA3 + USB3+ 10GB lan are available.
 
P57 and its will arrive soon ilk.
Intel said they are not doing USB3 etc for ages, but they need a new board for Clarksdale to manage the integrated IGP outputs. (P)57 is it, IIRC.

As for a replacement to the P55? Why do they need one? Intel is managing to differentiate processors based on platform now, not just performance.
P55 has been gimped for good reason - so they can upsell people who want a non-gimped setup to socket 1366.

H55 will add the pathway for the GPU.
P65/H65 will be the sandy bridge chipset. AFAIK P55 is still a 65nm process, so P65/H65 will probably shrink to 45nm and add USB3 / SATA 6gbps / PCI-E v3 (likely only for sandy bridge CPUs, if the chipset/socket are backwards compatible).

P57/H57 was supposed to add the braidwood or whatever they called it RAM caching, but I think those versions got canceled. Q55 is the business oriented version. With PM55/HM55/QM55 being the mobile versions.
 
Thanks for all the info! I'm apparently out of it when it comes to Intel's CPU roadmap as well.
 
I also heard of a socket R that's coming in 2011 after P55 series. Not much info on that yet still too early. But I think that will be a very different socket than 1156/1366 we have now.

I'm not sure I know the difference between what the chipset and the CPU should handle but if I would build a new PC today, I'd expect it to have the latest PCIE, USB and the newest sata without having to add boards or additional components. Frankly I don't expect to get much from the latest PCIe in terms of performance over the current slot given my present video card however as more cards are added I believe the latest PCIE standard handles multiple cards better at full speed. I could take advantage of the newest USB right now in terms of power alone although I do expect to have a USB 3 flash drive soon which would benefit from the speed boost. As far as the latest SATA - not necessary for me currently but SSDs should probably be in my future within another year or so.

I see there are some benchmarks for the i9. Hopefully by the time the i9 comes out next year intel will be ready to support the current standards for all the components on the motherboard.

it will NEVER FIT a P55 class board.

I can pretty much guarantee you that.
