hi, im on the verge of upgrading and would like to know which chipsets are good and which to be wary of.. the machine will be geared towards gaming with future purchase of gefore 4 ti .. can someone also tell me who good the intel 845 chipset is and the difference between 845pe / 845e.. im have narrowed my manufacturers down to either asus abit or gigabyte

cheers

i845PE adds support for 333MHz memory. Here's the big ol' comparison chart at Intel: link. The better performer would be the new i865 and i875 chipsets, which give the Pentium4 way more memory bandwidth to work with (it needs it). These two would have more forward compatibility than the 845 family.

The favorite AMD chipset at the moment is the nForce2 family, with lots of features and great performance. I have one myself, which ironically enough is an office system instead of a gaming system.

You asked about Intel first, so it sounds like that's what you had in mind. There are several reviews on the Anandtech front page that should help you get an idea of the performance aspect of the different chipsets. Hope that helps, and welcome to the Forums. Good luck with your new system! 🙂
