Chipset fan making a lot of noise...

I have an Evga nForce 590 SLI mobo that has served me well for the last couple years.

Over the last month or so the chipset fan has started making some noise and for the last 2 days it has been very noisy. I attempted to clean the fan (wasn't very dirty) but no dice.

So, can I buy a replacement fan somewhere?

Or is it time for a replacement?

If replacement, what board would you recommend (I like the nForce chipsets, never had a problem with them, I'll need one ATA100 connection and Athlon64 X2 support, onboard sound, but no need for onboard video).

I had a very small (25mm?) chipset fan quit - sent for a replacement ($12!) that died after another year.

So I used scotch tape to hold an old 80mm $5 case fan in place standing on top of the video card pointing at the chipset as a temporary fix - it has been going for 2 years

Look for a fanless northbridge heatsink. Clean up the chip properly, apply a thermal grease or ceramique, done. If you have decent airflow in your case you should be good with a decent cooler and proper installation.

I emailed evga to see if they can sell me a new chipset fan. I will look into a good heatsink as well because it is located directly under my GTX 260 and I think that has something to do with the fan's failure (noise started at about the same time, maybe I hit the fan during installation, don't know for sure).

It can be a PITA when the graphics card sits right over it, and you want to use a good passive solution. I have had to grind down fins a few times so the vid card could still seat.

I think the first one you looked at seems decent. Check reviews on it and get a sense of how it functions in the real world. I have that zalman on my epox mobo and it has been doing its job for a few years now no problem.

What you found should be good. No need for bigger HS since it's right under the GTX cooler. That cooler should provide enough airflow nearby. But what kind is the factory heatsink? Can you provide some photos? It might be enough if you just unplug the broken cooler and use just the heatsink.

That's a good point, if it is this one I'd just unplug the fan. If you are OCing and have cranked the chipset voltage up, I'd probably still go with the 1 linked.
