Chipset fan died on A8N-SLI Deluxe. Replacement?

Sorry to bring up this topic again. New to this forum. I did a search and seen a similar topic with suggestions to get the Zalman ZM-NB47J fanless heatsink/cooler. What I didn't see is if anyone was using that with dual video cards. I think all the people's profile listing their PC parts all had 1 video card. I'm looking for something to fit on the chipset that will allow me to also fit my 2 EVGA 6800GT video cards.

Also, would that Zalman cooler be that effective on that chipset (assuming it fits) being so close to 2 video cards pushing out their own heat. Bear in mind this system also has 2 optical drives, 3 harddrives, sound card, TV tuner card, 4 sticks of RAM, and an AMD FX 53 chip. Would that fanless cooler keep things nice and cool?

I seen on one reply a guy showed a picture of his but he mounted a fan on there. Was this drilled on or how would that work?

Any advice on what to put in place would be very helpful, right now my PC is lying in pieces untill I get a new fan and this old PC just isn't as fun. =)

First of all: Welcome to the forums!

In my sig you can see another pic for judgement of space. However, I think the 6800GTs are bigger than my 6600GT...
Tempwise everything is fine & stable...The VF700 pushes a bit of air onto the heatsink and from the right my 120mm intake fan blows through the HDDs...

If you are using stock heatsinks & fans on the evga cards, then fitting the zalman chipset heatsink won't be a problem. HOWEVER, if you are going to use third-party coolers on the video cards like the zalman, you are better off mounting them on the opposite diagonal instead of what zalman shows on the instruction sheet. This way, you can get everything fitted.

No way of fitting the zalman chipset heatsink if you intend to use an Arctic silencer on one of the cards that wud overlap with the chipset.

Are you talking of this setup?

Yes, daggermeerkat. That picuture is what I was talking about. Is it possiable to use a fan on that zalman and still fit 2 6800GTs.

Also, the EVGA heatsink / Cooler on these cards looks alot like that after market one, I think its the Arctic cooling NV Silencer. The designs are similar. Anyone know if those particular cards will have the space for zalman cooler? and fan?

I do have 2 front mounted case fans that suck air in, one side mounted fan which I can switch around to blow air in if needed, and 2 fans sucking air out the back. Would this be ok to help keep that zalman cool in the event I can't get a fan to fit?

Thanks for the replys and help!

There's no way you can fit that zalman chipset heatsink between two cards fitted with Arctic Silencers. The video card that will go into the primary pci-e slot won't let you fit the zalman in the first place; you are going to have to replace that silencer with either another heatsink/fan or the zalman fitted in the opposite diagonal.

The second card will fit fine.

You won't need a fan on the chipset heatsink as long as you have all those fans sucking air in and blowing it out.

Mechbgon- that's a good picture. Those look like they might at 6800 cards. That heatsink / fan looks very close to what mine is. And that cooler and fan fit right in there. Looks like I have two options now. Cool. Thanks for the info.

Acutually mine are NOT fitted with that arctic silencer, I was just stating they are similar in design. I found a picture of one and I assume the arctic silencer is too big due to that fan sticking out so far. The EVGA cooler doesnt hang down that far.

In that case, the zalman would do quite well.

To fit it with a fan, I squeezed each of the two of the fins in each of the 4 corners with a plier so that it was narrow enough and would hold the screws in place when I put the fan on top.

Didn't do any drilling or anything.

Ok, gettn good info here. Hope to up and running by the end of the week. Ill have to order stuff online. Nobody around here carries quality cooling parts. =(

Just a quick OT question here. I just replaced the fan/heatsink on my MSI K8N Neo4 Plat. with the blue zalman heatsink. I am measuring temps just under 50 degrees C. Isn't that a bit hot for a chipset? Do I need to add a fan?

Nah, that's fine. Nforce 4 SLI chipsets are spec'd to run upto 90.

You are never at a loss if you do add a fan. Extra cooling always helps!
