Chipset cooling. How important?

OK, so in my laptop my video card sits on nop of the chipset.

There is a thermal pad ( think,,, little bluewhite foam patch?) that goes ovewr it...

Can I reuse this thermal pad?

your not supposed to reuse thermal pads.

edit: but i dont honestly know ur not supposed to do alot of stuff people still do it.

You aren't supposed to in a desktop atleast, just use some thermal compound. Not really sure about laptops though

Well, ther thermal pad isn't really compressed.

It is still about || that thick

and i couldnt peel it off and use paste cause it wouldnt make contact.

Ok, so we've established that I need a new pad. Where do i get them?

What you've described doesn't really sound like a thermal pad. Thermal pads should be so thin that you can almost see through them - only fractions of a millimeter.

You said it's like foam - foam is full of air, and therefore a terrible conductor of heat. Are you sure that isn't an insulator, to keep your chipset and VC seperated...

The most effective and most common thermal pads are made by Honeywell.

A few Years ago I saw some store brand thermal pads at CompUSA but I do not know if they still carry them.

You can just deal w/o a pad like my Ultra-D. A lot of people just screw the pad (read DFI-Street/XtremeSYstems). But of course this depends which board you have...

For my DFI NF4 board, as long as you mount a new HSF with even pressure (no tilting), you won't crush the chipset. My chipset is bare naked and my fan has no pad. I put AS Ceramique on it and it works flawlessly. Cools hella nice too.

This is about 1/20th as risky as removing an IHS off your Athlon 64/P4 and then mounting a HSF.
