And to think I paid $80 for my mod chip 5 years ago to some guy in the Netherlands.
And it actually worked.

Wait, the PS2 modchip description states "Play PS2 and PS1 CD-R Backups and Imports!"

???

I thought PS2 has a DVD-ROM?

<< The chip that we sell at the moment is compatible with PS1/PS2 imports backups with swap trick. >>

Bah the swap trick sucks.

Just saw this comment on one of their pages, don't know if it was just an old comment, but I had heard a few weeks ago that no one had the real mod chip yet for the us version. Some were claiming to have it to just have a bunch of backorders...I don't know?

pssst; do you work at mod-chip.com or do you just like to post "illegal" sites....

Sorry to inform you but mod-chips aren't illegal. It'd be like saying modifying a CPU from its original specifications would be illegal. People can do almost whatever they want to with things they buy as long as it is not causing harm to others. Now if people use the chip to play copied games that they do not own themselves, then having the copied games is illegal. But if they own the CD/GDROM and also have a 'backup' then they are okay. Now if I wanted to modify my toaster to make it cook toast quicker, that would not be illegal. It would only void my warranty. I don't see why posting a link to a modchip place would be locked, since people can probably post links to computer stores that might sell 'modified' CPUs.

The PS2's not even stateside yet and already they have mod chip for it!

I guess for some reason I didn't really expect the to figure out how to chip this one...I thought Sony would've learned their lesson and just coated the whole PCB in plastic! ;)

Or, you know, something that would make sense...

Yes and I also don't like this assumption that Mod chips HAVE to be used to play pirated games. There are many great games released in Japan that havent a snowball's chance in hell of being picked up for American release, sometimes its cultural, sometimes the reasons are unfathomable... but a mod chip is the only way to play these games short of buying a japanese system. I've been playing import games since the days of the NES and I've never regretted it. Here is a gamespot article about console games that will never be released in the United States http://www.videogames.com/features/universal/neverplay/

aside from the "will never be released", I usually prefer some games from their natural release, cos when the games is released here, some are brutalized such as bad dubbing, spotty translation, idiotic cosmetic change, and friggin idiotic crappy rock/grunge music (I actually like Nirvana type music, just not crappy ones, although to be fair there are one or two that's really good)
enuff ranting, back to my Guitar Freaks :)

The US PS2 will almost undoubtedly use the revised motherboard that prevents the original modchip from working. This revised board is already out in Japan and uses the same model number as the original.
