Chinese shopping mall reserves pink parking spaces 30cms wider because women...

Wider car parking spaces for women drivers in China spark accusations of sexism

the 10 spaces outside the main entrance were provided after women had trouble parking in the standard basement slots, managers said.

While I think this is kind of a dumb thing to do, and in China both genders have really, really, really bad drivers, I must applaud the mall for finding a way to find free worldwide advertising.

Also, some of the comments are amusing:

One online poster on the Dalian car park said: "The two most dangerous things in the world are men who cook and women who drive."

LOL, come to SF, the bad drivers are from everywhere. And there are plenty of bad drivers.

It's funny that you can tell if a car is from SF, the bumpers are usually dented.

The greater question is "If parking spaces were a foot wider, would douchebags *still* Park their 'BMAudicesBenz' across multiple spots?"

I think there may be a difference between Asian drivers in China vs. Asian drivers in North America. It should be noted that Asians have the lowest car accident fatality rate in the US at least according to 2006 numbers, and by a very large margin.

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/810995.pdf <-- See Table 1.

Fatality rate per 100000 population:

31.17 - American Indian
13.90 - Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
12.50 - White
12.31 - African-American
12.27 - Hispanic
04.00 - Asian

Also, Asians were least likely to have alcohol as the cause of the fatality (Table 3), again by a large margin.

48% - American Indian
36% - Hispanic
32% - Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
31% - White
31% - African-American
22% - Asian

I think the reason asians have low fatality rates is the reason people think they drive bad. They err incredibly on the side of caution. When I talked to a guy from Taiwan, he tells me how surprised how fast people drive. I was thinking that's funny, because people here think they drive horribly slow.

All huh? And here I thought saying "most" was bad.

I don't think that makes for an accurate comparison. Fatality rate per mile driven would be better but this was likely far far easier

According to the insurance industry here, cities in Ontario with large Asian and South Asian populations tend to consistently have the highest collision rates. Maybe not fatal crashes. Fender benders and what not. So maybe there is some truth to the stereotypes. There's a lot of people in general who shouldn't be driving though. That's why I'll welcome driverless cars with open arms.

I also learned that my home town now has the highest collision rate in Canada now per 100 vehicles. Can't say I'm surprised. Cops don't enforce the traffic laws within city limits. They're too busy busting people for speeding on empty back roads.

It wouldn't change. Asians have few fatal accidents because they all drive minivans 30 miles an hour under the speed limit. Usually in the passing lane.

Asians are clearly distracting American Indians behind the wheel with their poor driving habits.

Is that the only city that you've lived in? Sorry, but that's what bumpers are for when parking in a big city.
