SHANGHAI, China - China slaughtered 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered crackdown after three people died of rabies, sparking unusually pointed criticism in state media Tuesday and an outcry from animal rights activists.

Health experts said the brutal policy pointed to deep weaknesses in the health care infrastructure in China, where only 3 percent of dogs are vaccinated against rabies and more than 2,000 people die of the disease each year.

The five-day slaughter in Mouding county in Yunnan province in southwestern China ended Sunday and spared only military guard dogs and police canine units, state media reported.

Dogs being walked were seized from their owners and beaten to death on the spot, the Shanghai Daily newspaper reported. Led by the county police chief, killing teams entered villages at night creating noise to get dogs barking, then beat the animals to death, the reports said.

Owners were offered 63 cents per animal to kill their own dogs before the teams were sent in, they said.

The killings were widely discussed on the Internet, with both legal scholars and animal rights activists criticizing them as crude and cold-blooded. The World Health Organization said more emphasis needed to be placed on rabies prevention. ...

No different than wanting to bomb Iran or torture Al Quaeda to get them to talk. Soulless barbarians walk among us appearing to be alive, but they are quite emotionally dead.

When they came for the dogs, I said nothing, because I was not a dog. Or something.

?We are urging everyone to actively boycott ? not a word we use lightly ? anything from China given the bludgeoning killing of thousands of dogs,? PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said.

Umm... looking around my room, I should probably just douse the entire place in kerosene and light a match...

Once again, great plan PETA. Keep up the fabulous and constructive work.

One type of birdflu was found in this region recently, where it also has been found years ago. At that time they killed a few million chickens and other birds as 'prevention method', and that will probably be repeated this time if it turns up at more than one farm.

But then, that's food and not a pet, so most people couldn't care less.

The real sad part is, they wouldn't hesistate to round up 50,000 humans if they were suspected of carrying a disease either.

I guess that's a bonus when you run an authoritarian regime with over a billion people, 50K here and there doesn't really matter much.

Some of you guys are nutz. How did religion get into this discussion?

Anyhow, this thread just underscores all the other atrocities in this same catagory of atrocity.

1] Selling dogs for food.

2] Selling dog pelts for cheap fur clothing. Dogs are shipped live in tightly packed wire crates stacked high on trucks and the crates are tossed to the ground, injuring most dogs. Shepards, labradors, etc. It made the World Press a few months ago.

3] Other fur bearers like fox and mink factory farmed and treated with horrific barbarism. That also made the Press.

Chinese factory fishing fleets also rip-off as much fish and shellfish out of the ocean as they can get away with, all around the World. Though they are not the only Nation doing that.

It just always boils down to the filthy slime who run that Country. Those 70-80 year old commie bastard parasites we see always smiling that same grin. Like the grin the family cat has after eating the familiy canary.

What can be done about the dog brutality? We should boycott Chinese products. And not let China have the privalage of hosting the 2008 Olympics. They plan on killing a lot of dogs to "clean up appearances" where the Olympics will be over there.

Well I never shop at Walmart, ever, and I advise everyone else to do the same.

They also plan on shooting rockets into the atmosphere to keep it from raining during the Olympics.

I see your point comparing Al Queda to dogs.
Seems a little Harsh for Iran though maybe Ahmadinejad, but I wouldn't call the populace dogs.

I can understand the need to cull the animals to stop the spread of disease, but couldn't they find a more humane way of killing then other than clubbing them to death?

The photograph of three men clubbing a dog lying on the street made me feel horrible.

(see photo here)

Perhaps they could herd all dogs into a Tiananmen type square and keep the tanks and soldiers ready?

:(

That's just the start of the barbarism apparently. 500,000 dogs live in an area that's next up for clubbing.

Wanton savagery! All i have to say is every person clubbing those dogs should be clubbed themselves.

Let's wait and see how the dog slaughter effects World opinion as the barbarism escalates.

It's hard to imagine no serious repercussions here in the USA. Boycotts would be the best way to sock it to China. We should halt all trade. We don't need to do business with communists. All that does is build up an enemy.

Of course they could.
But we are talking about China. Animal cruelty is the norm.

I would be seriously embarrassed to be Chinese at this point in time. They are about 100 years back in everything but making cheap crap.

Ah I see. Everyone talks about the 50,000 dogs kill, but apparently the 2000 Chinese died of rabies every year doesn't matter, and nobody talks about them.

Yeah China needs to do a better job vaccinating dogs, and yes China could and should have used more humane ways to kill those dogs. But when you have 1.3 billion people to worry about first, you don't have the time and resource to treat the dogs as well as people.

And when you people respect human life from other parts the world less than some dogs life, I guess you shouldn't expect those people to respect you or work with you in foreign, trade or any policy too.

Meh, clubbing is probably the most cost-effective method of getting rid of them. Borderline brutality? yeah, but cheap and easy.

I still don't understand why people still believe dogs should get special treatment -- they're still just animals. As it was brought up eariler, we probably slaughter more than 50,000 chickens everyday, and based on what i've seen and read, I would hardly call some of the conditions chickens are in "humane." Heck, my parents buy live chickens every once in a while, and they've always taught me the proper way to kill them while preserving the flavor of the meat is to bleed them to death.

Do I wish they would've given the dogs a quick death? yeah, and if they had to club, just give it one large blow to the head (like they do to fish in the grocery stores), but I wouldn't be losing any sleep over this, and definately wouldn't be boycotting anything because of it.

and yes, I have a pet dog.
