i just have one question, why does the USA care about Taiwan? according to history, a coup was attempted in 1947 or something by the communists and now it is just gonna finish.

and to quote a great movie
"This is civil war. This is our war. Not yours."

it's more like a delayed civil war US had in 1863 but with the original union with no way of winning. I dont know why i should care if china invades. let them just take that damn island and finish their complaining and threats. We've spent enough money just invading afghanistan and "coming to the defense of" the iraqis. just let taiwan go. what does one island have to do in the grand scheme of things? The last thing America needs is MORE enemies.

theres plenty airforce and military on hawaii. heck you aren't even the front line. we have mlilitary in guam and korea...japan... europe.. china is surrounded. chinas got millions of troops. but marching across the sea is not so good a tactic.

they didn't win. both sides just sorta settled to leave it be. now they want to change that illegally. china is an oppressive communist dictatorship. taiwan is a free democratic people. it is not good to allow precident for dictatorships to just stomp on small countries. china is already guilty of enough war crimes killing millions in tibet. and supporting a regiem of north korea that has killed/imprisoned millions.

Yawn.

There is no reason for China to attack Taiwan or anyone else, and every reason not to.

1) You don't kill your trading partners.
2) Nobody in their right mind believes that an occupation after a war would actually work.
3) 50% of the Bank of China's loans are in default. Give them a good kick or a little introspection and the country is boned. They aren't going to rock the boat.
4) By the time that China is modern enough to face off against France or the U.K., let alone the U.S., it'll be so integrated with Western nations as trade partners that an attack would be unthinkable.

Why would China attack us or provoke us into a war? The US practically supports their economy.

Yeh, all we have to do is outsource the business to india instead of china

More like why the hell should the US give a sh!t about Taiwan. Surely not enough to lose American lives for their cause. Its just the correct thing to do to voice out against China since we stand for freedom but I doubt the US will take any action. And like already said they have no reason to provoke us.

The EU is essentially allied with China against Taiwan. It would be interesting to see what would happen if they decide to invade Taiwan.

the history is actually quite complex and not as clean-cut as many people seem to think. very roughly the "coup detat" you mentioned was the overthrowing of the Kuomintang (nationalist/KMT) by the CPC (communists). In 1949, the communists defeated the nationalists and chiangkaishek fled to the island of taiwan carrying the ROC government title. The communist state of the mainland became known as the PRC and in the 1970s i believe, most countries including the USA and UN switched recognition of CHina from the ROC to the PRC.

much of the confusion arises in the sanfrancisco peace treay, when Japan renounced ownership of taiwan. the treaty doesnt state which government the island would be "returned" to, keep in mind, the chinese civil war is formally still going on. the mainland views taiwan as a renegade province (in rebellion) and thus the island is "returned" to china. the ROC still believed it was the legitimate government of China and thus they believed taiwan was rightfully returned to them.

what makes matters even more confusing is that the KMT party, the party of the original ~1+ million people who fled to the island in 1949 do NOT support taiwan-independence. this party is made up mostly of descendents and the people who retreated in 1949. while not completely for reunification, they have no intent on independence because they still believe they are the ROC/legit government of China. Because they feel this way, some people say they favor eventual peaceful reunification with the mainland.

the DPP (democratic progressive party) is the current party in power and is for taiwan-independence. they are formed largely by what they call "native" taiwanese.

basically everybody on the island can speak mandarin chinese, as that was what all schools officially taught (they were established by the KMT).

1. all you american mofos telling Taiwanese people to shut it and just be chinese...up yours! why don't I call you British, ho! :|

if they're ethnic english then they shouldn't have a problem with that. many 'taiwanese' are ethnic chinese.

Taiwan is basically a land of former Chinese who fled communist rule, just like the US is made of Britains who fled the British monarchy.

We have alot more in common than the EU and China would like for you to think.

well the communists took advantage of the fact that the chinese military was weakened from fighting the japanese. sneaky sh*t.

not entirely, the people who fled from the mainland make up only less than 15% of the population of taiwan. and the rest are almost all "native" taiwanese, people who have lived there for generations (of course, they did originate in China).

Yes, so you have natives that chose long ago to leave the mainland and Chinese who fled communist rule....now why again should they be a part of China?

the nationalists took the communist threat so seriously that CHiangKaishek largely refused to engage the Japanese (instead they pursued a strategy of running around to delay the japanese) and instead fought the communists. in fact, i think it was Gen. Stilwell that was extremely frustrated and even refused to work with Chiang because he was so focused on fighting the communists rather than the Japanese. that partially gave the communists an advantage in that it appeared that the nationalists were bent on fighting chinese people instead of invaders.

still waiting for the release of the "Mao : The Unknown Story". the reviews i've read have mao collaborating with the japanese. based on newly released soviet documents.

what a lot of you fools don't realize is that almost all the motherboards we're all using right now to type our posts are made in taiwan!

So if Taiwan goes to China, say goodbye to DFI, MSI, Asus, Abit, etc. Even if they come back under Chinese rule it will probably take a minimum of 5 years to sort all that out.

No more BIOS updates for you if Taiwan gets pwned by China!

$231,400,000,000 changed hands between China and the United States last year. A military conflict between the two would cause the entire world's economy to collapse. I'm about as afraid of an armed conflict between China & the United States as I am a conflict between the United States & Canada.

i dont think they should be apart of china. in fact, i dont really care about whether or not they be apart of china. im only concerned about the USA, and frankly, i think taiwan declaring independence would have some severe consequences for the US. i think they should lay off for a little bit (theres nothing wrong with the status-quo besides an issue of name) and wait for a better time to push their agenda. it would be best for all sides. i just dont want the US to enter into a conflict over a small issue like this, it would suck a LOT.

And most of the ram for video cards and motherboards, and cpu's...

Maybe it would give most of us a time to catch up then. 😀
