12%? I was under the impression that they overstated the real growth by a percent or so.

Actually the consensus seems to be that they are understating growth. The government actually has recently been taking steps to cool down the economy.

Anyone get the impression that China intermittently threatens Taiwan b/c they want to discourage companies from investing on the island? As China begins to exercise it's industrial/financial potential (from Shanghai south to HK) will they need the historical intermediary role played by Taiwan?

Closer to the topic, of course growth is hot . . . Walmart has more employees (by fiat) in China than they do in the US.

China's economy, while booming thanks to foreign investment and an increase in Chinese consumption of goods, is in a very precarious state. Their real estate sector is overheating and the banking system is an utter joke, if not worse. Almost every bank is insolvent and all it would take would be a speculation or crash for everything to crumble. Chinese walls anyone?

Exactly, consumers around the country and around the world demand lower prices. The companies are only obliging.

Yet they cry fouls and curse the heck out of those companies that move jobs overseas so they can lower prices and turn out profit. What a bunch of hypocrites.
