Fang Binxing, the designer of what is being called China’s Great Firewall, did some lecturing at Wuhan University, Hubei province. A protest broke out during his lecture and this is when the attack happened.
...
China’s web users are not very pleased with Mr. Fang. They do not like the fact that he help develop China’s internet censorship or what is being called the ‘Great Firewall’.
...
Thanks to the Twitter user Hanunyi, people were able to get a first hand account of the protest, the shoe throwing, and a picture of a hand holding an egg ready to strike their target.
...
The Great Firewall limits thousands of websites, including those about the Dalai Lama and the Falun Gong spiritual movement, from Internet users in China.

It filters out keywords on topics that have been deemed sensitive like Tibet or Liu Xiaobo and many, many more.

China’s government is serious about censorship and controlling the Internet in their country. They have even set up a State Internet Information Office.
Those students really have Spring Spheres of colorful steel to do something like this. I applaud their desire for freedom and realization that The Great Firewall is not there to "protect them" from the ills of pornography, non-state news media, "Western Propaganda," and historical accounts from every country in the world that differ from North Korea and mainland China's own accounts.

Hopefully, the protesters will not be seriously hurt if they discover who did it. But, I have a feeling that Twitter is about to get smacked inside Mainland China's borders.

Good for them! I'm still hoping someone will do something similar to our Peter Mandelson for the 'Digital Economy Act'. He may not be solely responsible but he's got it coming anyway.

So what say you American citizens on the IP Protect laws? Great firewall of America?

Instead of seeing how things are in China and going to opposite way, the US seems to be headed in the same direction, just with different stated goals ("protecting IP" versus "protecting people from western propaganda").

Same pattern can be said about the economic systems of those 2 countries.

All the western media focuses on things like Falun Gong and Tibet as if that's the kind of thing most people are protesting. Its a totalitarian government and a largely ultra conservative peasantry that recently banned time travel from TV shows. A hundred years ago a lot places in the US banned the saxophone as too sexy sounding and routinely banned books local from libraries. I can't blame the students for venting, but its not likely to go any further then that anytime soon.

US doesn't need censorship, because most americans are parrots of mass media...

Welcome to the fascism...:

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."

Fear is a great motivator. It's why parents will watch as their 6 year old is put through a virtual strip search to get on a plane and shrug their shoulders with "Well, if this is what we have to do to stay safe."

China will explode, just like the middle east. Its a matter of "when" and not "if"

And then you gonna do?
Find a job where you can tailor VERY HIGH QUALITY underwear "made in u.s.a." to try to reduce US debt?

Happily Ever After?

no no, you got it all wrong my friend, even the free China will continue supplying everything to US. Even when China falls we still wont be making any iPods here. I will continue working on my job and pay taxes that will go nowhere, while scores of my fellow Americans will be out of work forever, our govt will keep feeding, housing and clothing then by borrowing more money from the new Chinese govt.

It's ok, when you dream when you asleep, but, if you start to dream when you're awake - it needs a medical attention and it's called mind distortion...or mental problem...

...and its medical problem and is treatable, I will go to the doctor, use my medical insurance while it still lasts and get best in the world, researched and produced in US medication. But unfortunately "commie backed into a corner" syndrome is not treatable.
