Getting an 800 on the SAT MATH section is pretty standard for Chinese in China and in America...

Isn't it pretty hard to do?

Apparently not so for Chinese people.... same thing goes for the GRE as well. Chinese students in the US and in China score very high on the math section, if not a perfect.

Edit: when i mean by 800 on SAT MATH is that the score is perfect or near perfect (750+)

The GRE's math section is easy, at least if you have the proper background. Most of the white engineering graduate students I work with in my lab scored perfect or near perfect as well.

As COW has pointed out, we have more foreign-born people in the US than other countries listed in the article. Many of them are central americans who's culture doesn't value education as much as others and who tend not to speak English well.

If we cherry-picked from our rich areas like China did we could certainly look better.

This sounds like a cop out for reasons:

1) We have always been a melting pot

2) High concentrations of these central american foreigners are only in a handful of places in this country. These tests were taken nationwide.

You can't get into a respectable engineering program in the US without a perfect or near perfect GRE math score.

As a way to measure it, a 700 verbal score is the 97th percentile for verbal. A 700 math score is the 71st percentile.

I think the data is flawed. Germany has been complaining that Muslim immigrant workers are lowering their education standards. This leads me to believe they are not counting them into their education data.

Most chinese only have one child. They believe in killing their children if their parents have a second child. In many countries high school is not even mandatory.

what does any of that have to do with them kicking our asses?

Remember that this is the first year they allowed their kids to take the test. Me thinks from a strategy point of view they made sure it was too late to do anything before they tipped their hand. :hmm:

I'm just glad they like American movies. I don't see that changing and I can do my job on any foreign language films. They are training any creativity out of these kids and so it will be in demand

Who would of thought 20 years ago that being an engineer was a dead end but painting and doing music would give you a proper career if you applied your knowledge correctly and were good.

yeah the responses here are basically piss poor. How can we just blow this off?

I would challenge you to think about this issue more.

http://raleighdenim.com/ <--- denim made in North Carolina. I urge you to buy a pair.

Raleigh Denim

Handcrafted and sourced in North Carolina. Made from White Oak Cone Denim, each pair is hand signed and individually numbered.
$276.00

This is why we buy from China.

 So you wont buy American when it comes down to it. That company created 17 textile jobs in the middle of the recession. I don't expect to ever see you post complaints about job outsourcing if you refuse to spend money on something that will last you for a decade or more?

That's nice, for $276 I can buy 9 pairs of Levi's. With the money I saved I can buy Roger Waters tickets and support all the people that work on THAT tour.

I buy American where reasonable AND warranted.

ex) American writers vs Indian writers. Sure you're paying .10c a word but the quality is SHIT.

Seriously, you're expecting me to pay a 700% premium vs Levi's made in China.

Your example about the writers also applies to denim quality.

The denim I have on now cost more then these. Solid copper rivets and zippers sourced from a company in Kentucky that has been doing copper rivets and zippers since the early 1900's.

That's nice. My levi's were $32 at the store the Levi outlet.

$32 > $276

$276 for a SINGLE pair of jeans is unreasonable for most of America.

Race to the bottom will come to your doorstep as well.

Anyways I hope someone will find value in quality things and make a purchase that will be rewarding and help your fellow Americans.

lol that is so fucked up. How long do you think it takes for a laborer to make 1 pair of jeans? Let's say it's a contractor supplying his own tools (ie industrial sewing machine) and I pay him $50 per hour. If it took him over 5 hours to make 1 pair of jeans, I would totally flip out and get a new contractor.

I'd hire a chinese one :D

I sure do, I spend assloads of money at concerts and restaurants with the money I saved from not buying $276 jeans.

Seriously dude, a person making $10 an hour will have to work approximately 35 hours to pay for a single pair of those jeans.

The service industry. I was in it. Supporting USA manufacturing is where its at. If you can't afford it you cant afford it. Can't fault you for that I guess.

Honestly I don't fully agree with this. Outsource BS that can be made in China to China, keep hard to make shit or shit we can do better over here.

Lose manufacturing jobs, gain accounting/marketing/other jobs in the states.

Businesses need to be able to compete globally, and making shit that's 4x as expensive as your nearest competitor isn't the way to do it. (this statement does not apply to all industries)

But the quality is higher. Just because you dont value that doesn't make it not true. We need to focus on making higher quality items. We will lose in the race to the bottom.

Chinese are getting very good at making hard to make things.
