I was playing WoW and noticed that there are also a lot less bots farming.

Also not as much spam.

What would be the point for China in amassing unreal gold that can only be used in that one game?

The prison guards can sell the virtual crap for real money. I don't think it is a national effort by China.

As a prisoner at the Jixi labour camp, Liu Dali would slog through tough days breaking rocks and digging trenches in the open cast coalmines of north-east China. By night, he would slay demons, battle goblins and cast spells.

Liu says he was one of scores of prisoners forced to play online games to build up credits that prison guards would then trade for real money.

I remember when I first heard about the companies that paid people to do this crap in China, this is another level of crazy.

Do people really buy gold? Ive played WoW for nearly 4 years and never needed to buy gold with my real money. I get bugged having to pay 25.00 just to move a character to a new realm. So I couldnt see myself paying for gold.

Well, the United States use to use prison labor to benefit the country.
Sadly, the "progressives" thought forced labor is prison was bad and now we don't have it.
Instead our prisoners just leech off the taxpayer while giving nothing back to the society whos social compact they violated.

yes, it used to be more prevalent years ago when gold was harder to get yourself, but people still do it

Buying gold is stupid. The big spam I see in trade chat now is buying epic BoP gear. I wonder how many morons do that and blizz bans them a few days later.

It's funny how OT, PCG, and P&N each have a thread on this topic.

And it's not stupid when I'd have to spend hours in game making the same amount of gold as I can spend one hour's pay on and save myself the hassle. Not that I've spent the money on gold, but I don't think people that do are stupid nor would I hold back if I genuinely wanted that much gold.

blizz is actually rally bad about banning people for it, then will generally do wave bans every year or 6 months to kill off the farmers but its not often single acnts get hit by it

The phishing is bad. I stopped playing last year (just started up again) and I was getting 3-4 emails a day saying that I needed to verify password or my account was under investigation for selling it or crap like that. It has slowed down alot since I came back to the game but it hasnt stopped yet.

As much as I'd also like to see them be put to at least some manner of practical use, the downside then is that a free labor force would probably end up leading to increased motivation to classify more things as crimes, and increase sentencing durations, in order to get more free labor.

My very first toon (4 years ago) got banned when I bought gold. 3 days after I bought it I had a email from blizz saying my account was on a 3 day hold pending investigation of... Sure enough 3 days later got a second email telling me my account was deleted due to violating the rules.

So go ahead and buy gold, let us know if your account gets deleted.

So they ban all people who have received gold from gold farming bots?
What if you bought gold from a legitimate person who acquired the gold through moral means? I guess they wouldn't be able to detect that.

Now that is a stretch...
