Just got back from a mall downtown here in Shanghai that makes most of the malls back home look like run down strip malls. The sheer amount of development here is mind boggling. The Shanghai skyline looks more impressive than NYs I'd say. This is not to say that there aren't problems. Poverty is still a huge issue and the average standard of living is still low but damn its hard not to be impressed by it all when you are here.
