The Chinese government is definitely preparing for this one, but geeze. Most of the stuff I read about them preparing is just sad. "Chinese people taught how to clap properly" etc. How degrading.

It is a barbarous, classless culture indeed. Expect to see big public signs such as "no spitting, throw garbage into garbage cans, do not let your child urinate here" etc.

I just don't see Beijing as a great place for such a worldwide event.

So if the government is encouraging its citizens to be more classy, you are against it?

Of course, HK is a bit different from the rest of China... but I'd actually expect it to be classier than the rest of China, so...

Everyone thinks their own culture is classy and other cultures are less so. It's just a difference in values between cultures. When you're a child of immigrants, you can see both sides of it. I grew up with American culture and I consider myself to be respectful and proper. I find the way *some* Chinese immigrants behave to be rather rude. My gf is from HK and her parents think I'm clueless about politeness - not that I'm deliberately rude, but that I wasn't taught proper manners. It's the same way my parents (from China) feel about my sister's Americanized bf's behavior. So Americans may think the Chinese are less classy, but the Chinese think the same about Americans.

The Chinese are getting a lot of flack recently from the Western world, largely because of the momentum the media has built. Everything you read about in the news now has happened for decades and continues to happen with other countries. With the fast growth in China, the rest of the world is finally taking a closer look.

It is a barbarous, classless culture indeed.

That's an inflammatory statement - though not unexpected considering who said it. Outside of the last century, Chinese culture really wasn't that different (relative to the West) from Japanese or South Korean cultures. Chinese (and India) are much larger countries and have had a slower start than their smaller, modern neighbors. But once the snowball starts rolling...

well said ghostman, it's all relative. We are taught how to behave in certain societies. what you see as proper in one, might not be in another.

well...the cultural revolution elevated all rude peasant behavior as things to be emulated:p they basically did this to themselves.
