No where in there did it say the US government dumped the Bretton Wood System because of Japan's economic growth. Back on topic, I think that China is stepping up their foreign policy game. With the recently publicized debacle of checking personal emails in Gmail, this story and their oil securing policies (to name a few examples), China feels a growing need to control not just local enterprises, but the global arena. This is precisely because (as has been mentioned in this thread) they are growing at an alarming rate. I use the word alarming to refer to the reasonably common occurrence of a mansion in China right next to a shanty house. Explosive consumerism cannot be properly optimized in a country where so much of the resources of the state are used to check and balance the very thought processes of the people, so with respect to spending/acquisition, the people are left to pursue goods in any way they choose to: as long as they have the cash, and as long as it does not upset the state.
With time, I am hopeful that China's growing pains will ease and that whenever "things do not go China's way" it is not seen as the cultural "loss of face" that China thinks it needs to protect so badly. Give up on Taiwan, China. They do not believe in a one china policy, and the Chinese are going to have to become accustomed to not having their way in the global arena. Bullying tactics just don't work: not even China's economic relationship with the USA is sufficient to grant them that sort of leverage.

Well, they're trying to have it both ways. They own a lot of American debt and have their currency pegged to the dollar. If the dollar goes down in value, so does their currency, which increases the value of their exports. Either way, they think they cannot lose. But in order to maintain that parity, they would have to buy a lot of dollars and that means inflation for their economy, which can be devastating as investment dollars is wasted. IMHO, the best thing would be to float their currency. Right now, the Chinese government is supporting their export economy at the expense of their much bigger internal economy and Chinese consumers in general, which is stupid.

1. Spreads haven't dramatically widened for ABS, I know because I'm in the ABS market.
2. They are simply de-risking, not dumping. The assumption is ridiculous.
