The blathering serves to increase tensions & promote arms sales, also serves internal political purposes in Vietnam, China & the US. Everybody gets a boogeyman to target.

It's in everybody's interests other than maybe China's to de-escalate, get what they can out of a deal. That's reality, because if push comes to shove China can simply overpower opposing naval forces & take the whole thing. It's not like the US would try to stop them because we have no direct interest, not to mention that China & America's financial elite are best buddies.

Not anymore they aren't. Haven't you been following the financial news lately?

Even Land Rover was forced to admit there is NO RULE OF LAW in CHINA to protect them not that long ago.

Please. That's a narrow issue of patent/ copyright protection, not some sort of general lawlessness. Microsoft has the same sort of problems in China. OTOH, American investment in Chinese companies is obviously highly profitable, particularly for export products.

Not all of this is exactly breaking news, but you get the idea now what I mean by financially.

Not to mention, they have stolen (or probably been secretly sold) countless patented and secret designs for everything from the military to medical technologies. Any corporation doing business there deserves to lose everything they have there. Even in a protracted economic war, the foreign business properties there could be confiscated on a moments notice for non repayment of loans and everything else owed to China. I bet a nearly a quarter of Walmarts business and properties, including enormous distribution warehouses, are in China.

China at a glance:

  • Total Retail Units 412
  • Walmart Supercenter 379
  • Sam's Club 11
  • Neighborhood Market 2
  • Smart Choice (Discount Compact Hyper) 1
  • Trust-Mart Hypermarket 19

They have attacked fishing boats near the islands. You really need to educate yourself before you speak. They have built oil platforms right next to the islands.
And now they are building artificial islands that will be used for radar installations, runways and otherwise be militarized.

The idea though that China's navy is any match for the US though is ridiculous - at least for the foreseeable future. The have one, count 'em, ONE carrier group. The US has at least 7 IIRC. In fact the US Navy is more powerful than the next 5 or 10 countries combined.

You make my point entirely.

The US govt still owns 1/3 of GM, who manufactures & sells almost as many cars in China as in the US. There are other examples as well, I'm sure.

Welcome your multinational corporate overlords who don't care if you're American, Chinese or Zimbabwean.

The carrier is not operational; nor do they have operational flight wings for the carrier outside on paper.

Well said. Moving production to China is a fool's economy, for pretty soon that Chinese half of the company can make your products better and no longer needs the bloated American half.

60% of global trade goes through the area China is claiming, that's the main reason they want it.

In reality, I suspect they will settle for 75% of the claim. You know, claim big, accept something a bit smaller to appear reasonable.

It's not a fool's move for global capitalists at all, provided they retain ownership & control.

That's what free trade financialized global capitalism is all about, last time I checked. Management has no obligation to anybody besides themselves & the stockholders other than obligations defined by law. In this country, we've done a piss poor job of defining those obligations to the benefit of the people rather than the benefit of the ownership/ investment elite.

We call it Reaganomics. You may all now genuflect at the mention of his blessed name.

The Shiloh, one of the most advanced US cruisers, armed with guided missiles and cannon, is expected to ply the South China Sea after taking on fuel and supplies. Other vessels, including at least one destroyer, are likely to join it in a mini-flotilla, posing an immediate challenge as China builds airstrips and other facilities on 2,000 acres of land reclaimed in the past 18 months.

Let's see how bold the Chicoms are and if they walk the talk.

I think we only know what other people say they claim. As you say, they'll settle for the usual territorial conventions wrt whatever part of the Spratlys they can get. In the meanwhile, they're building an air field, consolidating their claims, playing the long game. It's their forte.
