For comparison, the current flood flows into the Three Gorges reservoir are 50-60,000 cubic meters per second. The mean flow rate of the Mississippi at Baton Rouge is 12,400 cubic meters/sec. The maximum flood flow on the Mississippi was ~30,000 cubic meters/sec.
In perspective, that flow is enough to fill Lake Michigan in 2.5 years.
Lake Michigan contains 4,900,000,000,000 cubic meters.
A flow of 60,000/sec = 3,600,000/min = 216,000,000/hour = 5,184,000,000/day = 1,892,160,000,000/year which is 38% of the water in lake Michigan.
That is a lot of water to try and keep under control.

The Three Gorges dam, which can handle inflows of about 98.8m liters a second, is already approaching its capacity.
Officials expect water levels in the reservoir, whose dam was built to withstand a water level of 175 meters, to reach 165.5 meters on Saturday.

this could get ugly

While it is probably fine I'm not sure I'd push it to full pool.
