I had an interesting thought the other day when I saw all those people on the Great Wall, does China remind anyone of Germany 70 years ago? the olympics(okay the don't have it, but they're trying hard), the helping build other nations (that just happen to be enimies of the US). those were the only two example I had.

Have you guys seen the scenes of those special police they are training to gaurd the olymics in case they get it. They could kick your ass.

You're always gonna be able to draw *some* paralells between just about any two societies... but I don't think today's China much resembles Germany of the 30's. The socio-economic structure is completely different. Germany was in shambles after WWI, China is a growing power trying to show the world that it's a "real" world power and can play with the big boys. They have a lot to learn yet though, but they will become a world power sooner or later......

I don't think he was drawing a parallel between the socio-economics of the two nations. I think he was reffering to the military state. The absolute power the government has over the people. The human rights atrosities the people of China suffer daily. *IMHO*

I see one big difference...or irony

Germany was always technologically advanced than us. We used their top scientists to develop the atomic bomb to end the war and turn us into a superpower.

China is still under developed and has quite a bit of catching up to do, and hence must rely on espionage to develop their latest weapons...including stealing our nuclear secrets.

Who needs technology when you got 1.2 billion people. If they ever went to war the enemy would run out of bullets!

TO be fair they didn't steal ALL the secrets they got from us...sure Wen Ho Lee gave them a bunch but Bill Clinton also sold them more than a few.

How did Germany get the (72?) Olympics? Was the decision made before the atrocities of the Nazis?

WTF are you talking about? Why would a Taiwanese want to give secrets to China?

sorry I was at school so I didn't get to respond until now.

I do mean to draw the parallels in terms of politics and military to a point. tagej is probably right in that you can always find some parallels, which is probably what I am doing.

However, it does still seem to me that they are stiring the proverbial pot, maybe not to start a war, but to get the point across that they could. I realize that there are many aspects of the two that are different in terms of econmics and political policies. I'm just wondering, that if we look at the way they could be camoflaging their rise to power, so that it is more drastic and thus the members of the United Nations are surprised.

axelfox, the scale of the atrocities commited by the Nazi's didn't begin to really come to view to the public until about '41-'42. dont' quote me on that date, I just know that it was later in the war. Germany held the '36 summer Olympics.

shr00m, thats an aspect I hadn't really thought about, I'll have to look into it.
