China Now Planning a Deep Impact Space Mission!

BEIJING: China is drawing up its own version of the US-built Deep Impact probe, media reported on Wednesday, two days after the American spacecraft smashed into a comet.

The third nation to launch a man into space has lofty space ambitions that include putting two astronauts into orbit this September and eventually sending up a space station and even a manned mission to the moon.

?Actually, our country has its own Deep Impact plans, it?s just we?ve never revealed them to the public before,? the Beijing News quoted Chinese astronomer Zhao Haibin as saying.

?Right now, our focus is on a moon probe, but once that?s successful, we will immediately start pursuing this plan.?

The main goal of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration?s Deep Impact mission was to knock free primordial materials from the nucleus of comet Tempel 1 that could unlock the secret of how life formed on Earth.

China?s mission would instead be mainly aimed at protecting the planet from being hit by a comet or asteroid, Mr Zhao said, referring to the kind of doomsday scenario shown in the 1998 film ?Deep Impact?, for which the US spacecraft was named. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1163067.cms

If there is ever an asteroid heading towards the Earth the US will send Bruce Willis and Ben Afleck, China will send Yao Ming and Jackie Chan. They'll manage to save Earth but in a heroic effort Bruce Willis and Jackie Chan will die saving the planet.

Considering China does not have the abilty to do this yet and the fact that this has been discussed from nasa the past 20 or so years I think we know who can do it these days. 😀

Anyone remember what book it was where China ends up changing the orbit of a asteroid and instead of just hitting the US they ended up killing the entire population of the earth? 😛

Whoa, I've read that - haha. Can't recall the title either. I remember that it kept skipping around through the stories of various people on Earth but concentrating on that of the team redirecting in space to intercept the asteroid.

I admire them for trying to get a space program going, but I think it is fairly obvious they have entirely wrong goals (beating US).
