China is launching their first astronauts to space next week. Lets hope all goes well.

Anything further then the 9 planets around us is too far to be of any use. Why spend trillions just build stuff that goes to space? Why spend billions to set up space stations? We have the satellites and such, and spending money on them is wonderful, but why the huge budget expenditure in space exploration?

Science research?

that's what i meant when i said "what a waste of money."

If you don't think science research is a good use of money, what are you doing using a computer?

Last I recalled, my computer isn't orbiting Pluto. When I was referring to the "waste of money", i wasnt referring to science research in general.
Uh....

You are either very dense, or very stupid.

Hmm.. I guess it's possible to be both, too.

scientific research is never a waste of money. you just don't know what could come out of it. do you think physics was developed for computers? of course not. but it is a basic foundation for understanding semiconductors which is used in computers. just a "small" example.

aside from research, going into space may seem like an impractical idea for now, but with active research we will probably make it practical. then there is also our basic desire for exploration and progress.

You misinterpret what i was saying. I guess it's not as obvious as i thought.

I think spending billions to do something americans and russians have done is a waste of money. I understand the point of pride and fame that goes with this accomplishment and the fact that they cant ask america and russia to hand over tech info but the amount of money China has spent could have been better used elsewhere.

you are possibly the most uneducated/ignorant/stupid person to ever post...space is going to save human kind. thats if we dont kill ourselves before we get into space..

by killing ourselves... i mean destroying earth..literally...planet earth is not going to be here for much longer from what we are doing to it...and also...a nuke war will prob kill us all before anything.. probably wont happen anytime soon..but within the next..10000 years (small number compare to other human-like creatures)...we will def be gone...(my own guess)

Other planets can be a source of resource, water, or habitation.

I completely agree that scientific research is never a waste of money in theory. However there is a time and place to do it. For example, NASA has been recently denied funds and continue to operate with ancient tech because US cant afford to fund it and keep up with it's current list of costs not to mention Defense and the rest of the budget.

Now you take a country like China who's economy is worse off then America and yet growing rapidly and exponentially. The 60 billion or whatever it costed China to fund this space trip could be used to boost their economics in this prime moment of time where China is growing. Or do something for the MILLIONS of it's own people that live poverty. that's why i believe this project is a waste of money

I would love for us to see whatever is under that ice in Europa. There is tons for us to see out there and it's sad that we haven't tried. I hope China succeeds with this mission and calls upon themselves to explore the solar system for all human kind.

Other planets can be a source of resource, water, or habitation.

Resource: Perhaps though this is dubious at best that some replacement for fossil fuel can be found.
Water: it is cheaper to purify it then to get it from space
Habitation: It's cheaper to build a giant greenhouse/Dome then to set up habitation in Mars

lazee - whether or not it is a waste of money is something that you are not in a position to determine. you do not know what will happen as a result of this. researchers there may be able to find things that american and russian scientists were not able to. i'm not saying that this will happen, but that it is a real possibility.

<15k years ago>why do we need to research metallurgy? this wood is very strong, and if it isn't, I can use more.</15k years ago>
metallurgy led to stronger materials, which led to more complex structures and objects, which led to mechanics (as in the process of), which enabled us to build simple motors which in turn allowed us to build more complex motors that power your cars, power plants, which in turn was used to fuel more research into physics, chemistry and biology.

We are monkeys with a few toys, we have much farther to go. What little achievements we make now, no matter how trivial we think they are, will be of huge benefits to future generations. If you settle on achieving equilibrium, you're dead.

Glad to see more than 2 governments allocating resources toward something much more important in the long run. :)

All these worlds are yours - except Europa. Attempt no landing there.

Over 500 years ago, researching electricity and electromagnetism was considered a waste of time because people thought that there would be no forseeable usage for it. They were right, its just that centuries down the line, progress will be made. I highly doubt the space research now will bring any tangible gains for many decades to come.
