apparently he's arguing that life is more important than posessions, and it is not ok to use a gun to defend yourself because guns are meant to kill.

Right, I'm sure the criminal feels that way too, as long as it's HIS life being more important than YOUR possessions.

If it was my barn, the guy would be a corpse. This isn't an honest mistake, this guy is going around destroying what people worked for. He detracts from society, and society is responsibility for removing this guy.

There is this Chinese kid in my Humanities class, speaks very poor English, you can tell he immigrated here. Anyway, today we were discussing a story about a guy who keeps burning down the barns of people he works for. His 10 year old son eventually told one of the owners, while his father was in the process of burning it down. The owner goes and shoots the guy.

The kid in my class says "That man is stupid, human life is more precious than objects. You Americans always want to shoot everyone."
My professor decides to debate him, asking him what he would do if someone was trying to burn down his house. The kid says he would not use a gun. The prof said "ok, hypothetically, you have only 2 choices. Shoot the man trying to burn down your house that you worked 30 years to pay for, and save it, or let him burn it. You have no insurance." The kid wouldn't give an answer, kept saying he would shoot a warning shot or try to shoot him in the leg.

It went on for about 15 minutes. The kid kept saying that Americans are horrible because guns are so commonplace, we think its ok to shoot people trying to rob us...apparently its ok to defend yourself, but not with a gun? Assault with a deadly weapon is the same regardless of what that weapon is. He also went as far as to say he WOULDN'T shoot someone with a gun to his own mother's head, and that it would NOT have been ok to shoot Hitler, knowing what he would go on to accomplish.

Kid, go back to China if we are so terrible here.

Why do you expect everyone to agree with you?

He can have whatever opinion he wants, that's what's so great about living here (as opposed to, for example, China). But it's when you start lumping people into groups that the trouble starts. And don't look now kid, but you're an American now too (unless he's leaving and going back to China, in which case he better stop having all those opinions).

Not if it were for the right reasons. (Disclaimer: I'm enlisted in the US Army, and ship out for basic training on the 13th of next month.)

Typical American response for anyone disagreeing with the majority on a number of issues. Protesting the war? Move out! Don't like the economy? Move out! Don't think our government it perfect? Move out! Don't think every country and every person in the world wants to secretly be American? Move out!

agreed. disagreeing? you MUST be anti american. unpatriotic. get out of the country. *sigh*

The prof said "ok, hypothetically, you have only 2 choices. Shoot the man trying to burn down your house that you worked 30 years to pay for, and save it, or let him burn it. You have no insurance."

thing is you dont have two choices. i think i would go over there... and SMACK HIM with a heavy object. knock the punk out. and get him arrested. i would not kill unless my life is in danger.

the thing about hitler and his mom in danger... well the kids a little extreme. when there is life in danger, its a whole new game.

btw, how does this have anything to do with chinese people? for this arguments purposes, the kid is a pacifist before chinese.

HEY! Thats Barn Burning by Willie Faulkner!

heh, I love Faulkner. And I'm not even spelling it right. And if I am, I don't know it, so its the same as spelling it wrong.

The opening sentence and paragraph (they are one in the same) to barn burning is insane. I love it.

Anyway, we have a Chinese exchang student from Nanjing who thinks Mao was the greatest thing ever to happen to China and thinks his great leaps and whatnot were also the best things ever, and thinks Kin Jong Il is a great and noble man, and (agrees with me) that Bush is a moron.

Its funny, really, the citizens or subjects of a government always like to believe it no matter what. Which makes you think . . . . what if SHE is right?

The kid isn't very good at making his point, which is too bad because it's a good one.

Kid, go back to China if we are so terrible here.

What kind of humanities professor advocates killing someone for burning down a barn ?? It would be illegal in most places in America.

Also I thought I had heard of China giving people the death penalty for property crimes, like smuggling or something.

deeko, understand everyone does not necesarrily have the same opinions as you do. and yours is not always right. no need to get mad at the kid.

if i were the guy, i would shoot the guy burning my barn. not because i think its the right thing to do, but because of my anger. if i saw someone burning my house down, i would kill him out of my personal anger. from a neutral standpoint, i dont see how it justifiable to kill the guy.

you dont agree that life is more important then property? preoperty is replaceable. life isnt.

as for the stereotyping, i think both you and the kid are doing it.

excellent. was wondering if anyeone would know.

To everyone saying "what does this have to do with Chinese"....you are WAAAY to sensitive. If you are Chinese and taking offense to this because I said he is Chinese, grow the hell up, I never said anything about Chinese people being bad, or that all Chinese people think like this, or ANYTHING even remotely like that. I pointed out he was Chinese because I was setting up the story, he grew up in China and is now in America, I never stereotyped Chinese people, and you AT'ers are too damn sensitive.

Heaven forbid someone should come to this land carrying different opinions/philosophies.

You can have different opinions.

Its another thing to insult an ENTIRE COUNTRY of people, a country that HE IS A PART OF. He isn't just going to school here, his family moved here in high school. HE is an AMERICAN. He is insulting himself, essentially.

Lots of people who are not immigrants insult their own country. Freedom of belief is more important than anything else, so just let him think what he wants.

I want to flip this argument around. How about, the world will be a better place when scumbags are eliminated from the planet. Valuing all else below someone, like in the arsonist example, is an unrealistic dreamfare. If people like that were dealt with immediately, then honest, hardworking people wouldn't be put in a situation to use any kind of force in the first place. It's a legitimate response in my eyes.
