Well, it was bound to happen. I expect China to be the top leader in technology in a few years.

China about 10 years ago ... you know when bush got elected ... had really weak CPU's they were laughable. They were lucky to be faster then the 486 architecture. Yeah... Now they have built the worlds fastest super computer.

Don't panic you say? It's no big deal. We have this or that technology. Hate to break it to anyone but the nation with the fastest toy can do major leaps and bounds when it comes time to crunch numbers for making and designing and retooling. It's only a matter of time, and you thought that they it was gonna take 20-30 years before they catch up with us. Sorry. They haven't just caught up but they are passing us up...

One of the reasons why we are in this hole is because we had a retard for a president for 8 years. One of the most anti science technology presidents we ever had. Pretty much nothing got funded and everything took a back seat and we were at a stand still while other countries are leaping and gaining...

Oh well! Everything in our lives today depends on tech. Computers are everywhere. The person that can produce them smaller and more efficient with greater speed is going to win the race. China isn't slowing down and this is a BIG wake up call.

Normally I am really excited about another country producing better tech but when most of our military is dependent on tech and that is pretty much the only advantage we have now to why we win wars. This could tilt the tables. I'm kinda disappointed that we have got so lazy and slowly giving up are edge on technology.

It should be interesting to see how the tide turns... It's still going to take a few more years... But if we don't start investing heavily in science and technology we are doomed. I know Obama is really pushing ahead on it but I don't think it's enough.

Thank you china for using some of the pile of dollars you got from selling yuan and buying up a pile of our Intel and NVIDIA chips. Exports ++.

Wake me up when they build a supercomputer using homebrewed hardware.

So you got up this morning and it was cloudy. "Bush did it!"

Damn, burnt the toast again. "If it weren't for Bush then my toaster technology would be better".

Oh, and you "know" that Obama is really pushing ahead on it? You want to show what percentage increase Obama has for computer research?

You think IBM and Intel said "Oh shit, Bush is in office, let's just stop working and get some coffee"?

There are some legitimate things that the previous administration can reasonably be blamed for but this is ridiculous.

Oh, your trash can needs to be emptied. Blame Obama.

Lol "technology leader in 10 years"

Maybe 15, but that has nothing to do with Bush. It's because they are sitting on piles of cash and can buy technology. It's always easier to do that than create. This system has some really neat aspects, but the Japanese surprised the hell out of people about 8 years ago when they went ahead and kept the title for a couple years. China has to do some original research now to really get ahead, but they can. Slave states have their advantages.

As far as supercomputers go, remember that what we know about isn't always all that there is. If someone thinks DARPA and the NSA don't have a few things in the works they haven't paid much attention to history.

I kinda lumped "being able to design anything resembling a competitive processor" and similar things into being a technology leader.

China doesn't have the "hard work" ethic that japan did to make these things happen. It's less a research issue and rather systemic in nature. You can't expect technology to thrive when you demand results from your government researchers, or their life in return for failure to produce results. I'm really not concerned about China in the least.

edit: and yeah, I was ignoring the Bush thing because it's (blaming him for everything, that is) such a joke.

The Chinese haven't developed a single new technology in the last 50 years... they take what others made and make it cheaper and crappier. Fact.

NPR had a story on this last night (it may be online, I'm too lazy to look it up). Some things they pointed out:
-there are five other computers currently being built (three in US, 2 in Japan) in the running to be the world's fastest, odds are this computer will hold the title for about a month.
-this one wasn't just a matter of assembling US designed parts, the Chinese designed the switches
-they looked at hardware only, the efficiency of the software design will obviously have a huge impact

70 years ago we thought the same about the Japanese, they could not build crap and and there gunners on battleships could not hit the broadside of a barn. Then Pearl Harbor happened and we found out different regarding their military technology. By 1980 or so they started to eat the lunch of American automakers on a massive scale.

PeshakJang, all I can say is, many thousands of years ago, a fellow named Aesop knew a fool like you would come along when he penned the story of the Tortose and the Hare.

So China builds one giant super computer and the world is ending in your eyes and it is Bush's fault? lmao btw I never understood how things were underfunded under Bush when he doubled the size of govt in 8 years.

http://www.top500.org/stats/list/35/countries

We have 56.4% of the supercomputing power in the world. China has 4.8%. You arent making any sense imo.

By 1980 or so they started to eat the lunch of American automakers on a massive scale.

You know why? Because we invaded, and brought our American industry and culture with us. They latched on and made it their own.

China isn't the tortoise, they are the flea on the back of the rabbit.

And wait... aren't you in with the idea that we need to slash military spending, because we are already light years ahead of the rest of the world? Sounds like something the rabbit would say. :hmm:

One of the most anti science technology presidents we ever had.
Mainly just in the human stem-cell department, he was apathetic to MM climate change, but it did not suffer the "setbacks" that human stem-cell research did. He did not screw with NASA, Defense R&D, GMOs, etc.

China about 10 years ago ... you know when bush got elected ... had really weak CPU's they were laughable.
China builds a supercomputer that overtakes Japanese and American supercomputers for a couple of months and it is Bush's fault? Oh man, I love this forum.

The CPUs / GPUs used in the Chinese supercomputer were designed by Intel and nVidia, last I checked both of those companies are American.

It is up:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130895386

in China's new champion machine, those are made in America. But Chinese scientists built the switches that connect those computer chips.

...

beating the previous record-holder by 40 percent may seem impressive, but the new supercomputer may not stay on top for long. Dongara says he knows of five supercomputers now being built that are supposed to be four times more powerful than China's new machine. Three are in the U.S.; two are in Japan.

...

CHARLES: That's a programming challenge: writing computer software that will manage a supercomputer's thousands of individual processors to work together efficiently.

Dongara says he has no idea how well the Chinese are doing with that part of the supercomputing challenge. Unlike the hardware race, the accomplishments of computer software are not easily measured.

The Chinese supercomputer will be owned shortly by Japan or America (assuming software quality does not already cause the Chinese supercomputer to be slower), stay tuned.... But, I am sure that it will not create the same media hype.

Also, as stated above, America has more than half of the top 500 supercomputers on the planet.

IT'S BUSHES FAULT!!

Well to be fair to the OP, Bush wasn't exactly science's best friend.

Regardless, these supercomputer titles are meaningless now. They were important 20 years ago, but today if supercomputing power available on the average desktop I just don't see what there is to get excited about.

So this is bushes fault . I don't like the guy either but man oh man . Were did china take the lead . This has 14000 intel processors and 7000 nv cards. I didn't know bush was president when these chips became available . You don't know what our military has so don't use this as a bush bash . Obama didn't do it either but its on his watch . Why did you bring that into this section of the forum . I just love secret agendas . Take this were it belongs.

This sums it up. China lumped together 20k+ of chips made by our companies, even if they designed a high bandwidth system to use them together.

Besides - with efficient usage of distributed resources, do you really need a 14k CPU computer, when you can just lump together a few thousand smaller ones?

The point is when bush was president they were frigen laughable in tech. Now they have a few million more graduates that hold PHd's and have the fastest computer in the world.

Snore. Keep hitting the ignore button. Yes they might have bought a shitload of chips from intel and nvidia but they had to design the hardware to integrate the hardware to talk with each other and process the information at a very large scale ... It's not just hardware of a terabyte switch but software to make them all process and balance a load of all the chips to work together to optimize the processing isn't a walk in the park matter of fact its about the CHEAPEST way to build a super computer and they could buy a few million chips from Intel at a mass scale and if you bought the hardware and software from china for under 10 million you could have one of the fastest systems in the world as well.

I think china is going to use this computer to retool it's existing chips...

Loongson 3

The 65 nm Loongson 3 (Godson-3) is able to run at a clock speed between 1.0 to 1.2 GHz, with 4 CPU cores (10W) first and 8 cores later (20W) over 600 million transistors.

Oh well... Tables are tilting except we've been asleep for the past 8 years. And yes bush did have a huge effect on the direction of this nation so... When you go to vote you better know where your party stands on tech.

I believe in a tech forum we should not lose the last advantage we have. If we do were screwed. But Snore on people... This is a race we can't afford to lose...

We are in decline, but we will get better when our kids grow up in the dirt and having a PhD in something is the only way to eat.
