Holly shit! That's a shit ton of bikes! Couldn't they at least start recycling them? Why not donate working bikes to third world countries?

I know I've seen stories about shared bikes piling up here too. Dockless bikes are a particular eyesore, as I'm starting to see them (in garish colors) haphazardly thrown on the ground at every downtown intersection.

Because it's cheaper to let them rust than to give them away and anyone given a bike won't need to buy a bike.

Why didn't they just sell them outside of China? Seems like other countries could absorb such supply. I mean there is a charity getting new Buffalo bikes for Africa, seems like they would be much more cost effective just buying these unwanted bikes dirt cheap.

No, it was fixed and you broke it. The question was why not DONATE them if you can't rent them out. Nobody on the back end is going to buy or rent and giving them away just takes away potential customers.

Chinese bike manufacturers borrowed a shitpile of money to build bikes chasing profits that haven't materialized. It's a lot like the railroad building leading up to the crash of 1873- financialized free market capitalism running wild.

I honestly see this coming in the US where they are deploying these. It's already been seen that people are complaining about them being left anywhere, you see blocks with 5-10 sitting around.

Holy crap at the pictures in there. We are such an incredibly wasteful species. And there’s I’m sure plenty of people that need a bike (I absolutely wish societies moved towards more density, more public transportation, and people biked a hell of a lot more than they do).

Holy fucking crap that's a lot of bicycles. We had the share bike thing here in Australia too. In Melbourne people liked to throw them into the Yarra river (kind of like shopping trolleys but with 2 wheels). Last time I was in Sydney I saw share bikes with the seats removed. It's a good concept in principal but it doesn't take in to account the vicious nature of the human animal. It's the world we live in I suppose.

Oh the horror.

Yeah there was a news story about down here in Phoenix. At one of the trash facilities there were hundreds of these bikes dumped off (I think they were all green bikes, but I've seen some other bike rental/share company that has yellow bikes). And people were going WTF they couldn't figure out any other use for them?
