I am ashamed that I had a passcode on my phone all this time. I really don't want children murderers to get away with their heinous crimes, and I think everyone should unpassword their phones right now.

And the legal system we have, which sometimes guarantees certain rights to those accused of crimes, has surely let some criminals go free. The original intent was that the innocent would not face punishment. (Now we have for-profit prisons, effectively incentivizing the act of putting people in prison, and keeping them there for as long as possible. Oops.)


"Innocent unless proven guilty" sure beats the "guilty until proven innocent" or "guilty because the state says so" systems of the past.
But people quickly forget the past, and they can be scared quite easily.

Or... the gov't makes a big deal out of it blocking them so no one focuses on better encryption, when the gov't actually already has means to break this version.

I suppose it's possible, but drawing any attention to encryption at all would be as likely to defeat that purpose as to help it. Before all I wanted encryption for was to protect my data from would-be identity thieves, who are generally a less funded and organized group than the U.S. government. Now that I realize that I need protection from the big boys, I'm going to be looking for it as a real feature, which will spur competition among the phone companies to improve it.

In any case, if you have a backdoor into something that you don't want anyone to know about, the smartest course of action would seem to keep everyone's attention as far away from it as possible rather than complaining loudly about your lack of a back door into it. No, I think this situation is exactly as it appears to be. The pure vacuousness of this particular argument is a clue to how powerless the government is to do anything about it as well, or else they wouldn't be resorting to such statements.

It's pretty sad how they have to stoop to that level, and even more sad that the general public falls for it.

Yeah there might be the odd case where it's true, but chances are encryption or not the bad guy was going to do it anyway. Unfortunately there are terrible people out there, but not everyone should be penalized for it.

And the government is not worried about murders, if they were, they'd do something about the drug cartels and school shootings. The cartel tortures and executions make ISIS look like teddy bears and it's all happening right on US soil. This is all about copyright infringement bull crap, that's all it is. To the government, piracy and other "computer crime" is pretty much on the same level as terrorism, if higher. At the end of the day it's all because of money.

Phones are a great way to get people in jail because lot of people store movies and MP3s on them. Though it's kind of surprising that you don't hear of that too often. Cops could easily just grab phones off people and start checking them but I have not heard too much of this being a trend unless you're trying to record them.
