I now have a dark area on the monitor screen. How can I fix this?
Note:I tried the Degauss feature several times.

Oooo I did this when I was about 8. I took a huge magnet and stuck it on the living room color tv ... Everytime you turned the tv off you could see the spot I touched, plus the color was all screwy in that area when it was on.

Anyway, I have no idea if you can fix it or not ... All I can tell you is that it never got better on our 27", and we kept that thing for years.

you need to take it to a place that has an external deguesser coil thing. it takes all the external magnetic fields out of your monitor. the temporary magnetic field on the part of the monitor that is polarized will probably go away though.

Yep, you need to de-gauss it.

Will say, the pixel mask on the front screen has been permanently magnetized, deflecting the beam such that it hits the mask grill not the openings, or even the other color's opening right next to it.

Some monitors have a (weak) internal degauss, triggered either by turning it on (that's those monitors that go BONK when you turn them on), or by a certain button or onscreen menu item. If not present or not sufficient, any well equipped TV repair shop should have the equipment to degauss the CRT for you.

yes, if it does not fix itself after a few days, crts have built in capabilities..at least for minor magnetization, you will need to use a deguass bar on it. I am not sure if you can rent one, but you should be able to take it to a tv repair shop or computer repair shop to have someone do it professionally for you. this will make it look just like new.

Suggestion, though I don't know if it will do more harm than good:
manually degauss with a magnet - run it over the entire screen in sweeping motions. Or do what hans said - find a place that has an extra degausser. Or build one. I've heard that it's been done - degaussing just generates a powerful magnetic blast to "format" the screen.

Don?t use a magnet odds are you will only make it worse, you need an alternating magnetic field, you can try the electric drill trick. The drill uses the 60Hz AC current in the coils of the electric motor. This will act like an external degauss coil. The trick to keep the drill moving in a circular pattern over and around the screen. Move the drill far away from the monitor before turning it off, or the residual magnetic field will influence the monitor. This often works however there is no guarantee.

Yes, the trick is to sweep a magnet powered with AC. If the power tools solution doesn't work, find a a stereo enthusiast from the 70's and ask to borrow his tape head demagnetizer. Sweep the tip back and forth over the screen and slowly pull it away from the surface (at 60hz it would be difficult to move away too quickly).

Wow, I wish I knew you could fix this manually when I had my problem a year ago or so. I showed my friend a magnet I had taken out of an old HDD and he had the great idea of seeing if it would stick to the monitor. It didn't, but those HDD magnets sure are powerful. I had a discoloration in the upper left quarter of my screen for about a month.

Good luck on your monitor bupkus

My brother purchased a used 32" TV from a friend of his. Not thinking, he put the TV on top of the car subs he was storing in the basement. These were 15" Precision Power competition grade subs. They have some seriously powerful magnets in them. The entire lower third of the screen was discolored and warped for a few weeks, but it eventually went away. I agree with the masses. If the discoloration doesn't go away in a week or 2, then get it fixed professionally.
