OK, I am currently working three jobs...one as a Legal Assistant (got my second promotion in 3 months today...I am now the senior legal assistant, I wait tables at a restaurant and my hubby and I started our own business...first job is on 8/4/07!!!

Anyway, I was at work today (waiting tables) and a mom, dad, and 2-3 year old came in. They ate and finished around 955pm. Then I saw the Mother give the 2-3 year old NIGHTTIME which is the generic brand of Nyquil....Need I say I don't know how much she gave, but it is an ADULT MEDICATION!

I politely said "what did you just give him" She said Night Time it helps him sleep...I said in the politest way I could

"DO YOU REALIZE THAT NIGHT TIME IS AN ADULT MEDICATION, AND IN YOUR SON'S BODY IT ACTS AN ANESTHESIA AND YOUR SON IS BEING DRUGGED TO GO TO SLEEP. I ALSO SAID IN A VERY POLITE WAY...DO YOU REALIZE THAT THEIR ARE NOW PUBLIC REPORTS THAT SHOW THAT THIS CAN CAUSE YOUR CHILD TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK, RESPIRATORY ARREST, STROKES, STUN HIS GROWTH, MAKE HIM ADDICTIVE TO SLEEPING MEDICATIONS, ETC. I ALSO SAID VERY POLITELY, I AM A LEGAL ASSISTANT AND DO YOU REALIZE THAT IF YOU SON DIES AN AUTOPSY COULD BE PERFORMED IN WHICH YOU COULD BE CHARGED WITH

...CHILD NEGLECT, CHILD ABUSE, DEATH OF A CHILD, AND A SLEW OF OTHER THINGS????

I SAID I THINK YOU SHOULD CONTACT THE PEDIATRICIAN BECAUSE ON THE BOTTLE OF THE MEDICATION YOU JUST GAVE HIM IT SAYS 12 YEARS AND OLD AND YOU JUST GAVE IT TO A TODDLER!"

SHE SAID "I WILL ASK THE DOCTOR." I TOLD HER JUST READ THE BOTTLE.

Was I wrong? I hate parents that are too lazy to take care of their kids! Keep your legs closed! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

A sad story but true. I've heard of this before and I also think its abuse. 98% of why kids are so bad these days are because of crappy parents.

They probably thought "Man, that lady is a biatch, no tip for her." and promptly forgot about it.
You can't fix stupid, you can only hope they earn Darwin Awards.

While I disagree with simply drugging a child to make them sleep, Nyquil is not counterindicated for children. The actual Nyquil dosage for a child reads as "Children under 12 years Ask a doctor" warnings include "Excitability may occur, especially in children."...

Pepsi...I so wish I was at this point. I can't get that little child out of my head. The bottle was almost empty so they use it every night!

+1 The doc told us to use about a teaspoon on our 3 y/o when she wasn't feeling well to get her to sleep. But then again, that was when she was actually sick.

I'd never recommend it in a toddler, but benedryl is a much safer sleep aid.

Benedryl has now been called out too. It causes the same things as mentioned to the idiots I told off today!

IT's sad but there are many things worse than such an episode.

I would never had thought booberfett could engage in a serious relationship. Are you sure you're not a hologram?

i dont think there's much difference between diphenhydramine and doxylamine succinate. they 're both ancient H1 antagonists or whatever.

but nyquil has other stuffs in it too i guess.. apap, dm, what else..

You are correct, according to Vicks, the manufacturer: link

My opinion is that you overreacted, given that you did not know how much the child was given nor why.

However, it certainly appears that the mother gave the child NyQuil for the wrong reason.
