Chiggers?

I'm a Californian, I don't know anything about the little pests. My parents just moved to Arkansas and my mom reacts to all the strange new bugs and stuff. So, one of my little sisters has a chigger biting her, apparently. Some way to get this off?

Take clear nail polish and paint the spot where the chigger bit and dug in. The pest will die from lack of air. If the insect is brown and flat about 3/16" across that is a tick and you can use a match that you just blew out to get it to withdraw or use vaseline on its body (won't be able to breath either.)

We have ticks in Cali, used to dealing with that.

howstuffworks.com says that the nail polish trick relieves itching but doesn't kill the chigger...

I get bit around my ankles, especially in the evenings. I've heard a lot of different stories about the fingernail polish trick. I've heard that chiggers drop off after a few minutes or a few days. About the only thing you can really do is put some rubbing alcohol on the bites and wait for them to heal. Take benedryl at night to help you sleep and keep you from itching.
