Chiefvalue used to be cheaper like newegg used to be last year. Until everyone found out it was the same company. They were probably trying to create a second newegg.... Good service, low prices, etc

My best guess is they merged so Newegg could have a shipping location on the East Coast. Didn't Chief Value used to list their address as New Jersey?

well, that may be the intent. people who don't like newegg might try somewhere else... and chiefvalue may be it.

Hi everyone,

I happen to have met the NewEgg founders a couple times and this is something we talk about often.

NewEgg actually started as a spin off of ABS computers. ABS has been around a "long time" as they started building systems in the early nineties i believe. ABS did so well because they were able to continually use their purchasing power to leverage bulk quanity deals. I like to think of them as the first true Distributor-Reseller. Up until about a year ago most of the big distributors (Ingram, Synnex, D&H, Ma Labs) did not sell to customers directly.

So anyways, ABS was getting all these great bulk item deals for its system components. NewEgg and eventually NuTrend were part of ABS's plan to push items directly to consumers. Since ABS was already around for some 8 (i think) years before NewEgg was started, the owners used the ABS name for buying power/leverage. Sometimes, its not what you know, its who you know.

In any case, from what I know about the owners; they are very levelheaded even considering how cuthroat this industry is.

You see, when you reach a certain % of market share, you can't efficiently increase it. By starting a shell company with another name, you can take up market share with that.

I wanted to post something at least somewhat interesting for my 1,000th post, so here goes. I recently picked up a Rosewill mouse to use with my laptop, and it got me wondering who they were. As far as I can tell, they are run by Magnell Associates, who operates ABS computers/Newegg/Chiefvalue. According to dharmariver2005, they also run CplusE, a hardware review site. As dharmariver2005 put it, "So now Magnell Associates is not just a player but a Referee too". When i googled Magnell Associates, this PDF came up. It is from this past December, and is a request for funds from the ETP . "... Our program supports the California economy, primarily by funding the retraining of incumbent, frontline workers in companies challenged by out-of-state competition....". It was interesting to me to see the $$ figures/details about training ABS has planned to better operate their growing company. It shouldn't be surprising to any of us that Newegg is growing (and has grown) a ton lately, and in this doc it says their internet sales double annually. Since i have given Newegg a lot of business, just like many other AT'ers, I thought i would share.
