Chieftec Dragon: can you only install harddisks behind the case's front grid (noisy?!) or can you put it somewhere else?

Hi,

If I am right the Chieftec Dragon DX-01 allows you to install 4 harddisks, is this correct? Now, simple question, but isn't there any harddisk slot that isn't located directly behind that lower half front grid of the Dragon, so you don't have a direct noise path from your harddisk to the outside? I checked the Chieftec site, but it isn't clear to me where you can install the harddisks, so perhaps somebody would be so kind to post a picture of this case inside and where you can install harddisks. I would really appreciate this very much!!

PS: is the Dragon DX-01 completely closed at both sides? On the picture here you can only see one side, so I was wondering if the other side is exactly the same (i mean completely closed without any airholes) because they mention you can also install an optional side panel cooling fan with this case, which makes me think that there might be airholes on the side that you can't see on the picture for air to go in or isn't that the case? Anybody can please clarify this or perhaps post a picture of the other side of the case if possible?

Thanks in advance!!

Mike.

the chieftec, along with about every other case on the market, has a HDD rack right near the front intakes.

also, the two sides are the same. the optional side fan is a different side panel that you can order.

as for your hard drive issue - you can buy a 5 1/2" bay HDD enclosure. just put the HDD on its own IDE chain. its better that way.

Isn't it so that with the Chieftec Dragon you can also install 1 harddisk I believe in the upper half so it is away from the front intake grid or am I wrong about this?

Oh, and if anybody is able to make a picture of the inside of this case (with a digital camera or something) I woud really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Mike.

I'm using 5.25" bay enclosures for my 2 HDs. They are only a couple bucks each. I was able to remove both HDD cages.

You can also mount the removable cages anywhere in the case there is room for them with industrial strength, double-sided foam tape/velcro; or buy some installable cages
from newegg - Shop by Category > Accessory, Case > Evercase to mount with screws.
Also installing some filter material behind the lower grille can cut down on noise as well as isolating the drives with rubber (requires some not too difficult modding)

buy quiet drives to begin with. barracuda?

top 3 inch tray isn't in front of grill. only bottom
you could use silent drive enclosers in the 5" bays.

1/ So if I understand it right ALL harddisk bays are located directly behind that big front gril at the bottom half of the Dragon DX-01 case, below the floppy drive bays? I mean, there isn't like a bay where you can place the harddisk that isn't directly behind that front gril, is that completely correct?

2/ second, if the specs say "Drive: 3x 5.25"+2x 3.5"FDD, 6x 3.5"HDD", what do the 3 categories of drives that you can apparently install with this case mean exactly. This is probably a newbie question, but I would appreciate it if somebody could explain it with the above example spec., so I can be sure I am understand those specs right. Like, are harddisks (HDD) always 3.5". I used to think that the 3x 5.25" was referring to the harddisks. As you can see I am obviously confused, so I was hoping somebody could clarify this.

Thanks!!

The 3.5" bays are designed to hold either the HDDs or floppy drives. You can put FDDs in either (or both) of the top two 3.5" bays because there is a cut-out in the bezel for the face of the drive to protrude through. You could mount HDDs in any of the 3.5" bays.

The 5.25" bays are where the bigger optical drives (CDrom, CDrw, DVDrom, DVDrw, etc) go. You can also mount HDDs (and FDDs too, with a new faceplate for the drive bay) in the 5.25" bays with an adapter kit.
