CNN said:
House subpoenas for President Trump’s financial documents will remain blocked the Supreme Court said, sending a controversial case back down to the lower court for further review.
How long would this 'review' take?

wtf this means? And what way did Kavanaugh vote?

Kavanaugh and Gorsuch both decided with the majority, in both cases. Alito and Thomas dissented—and as per rumors they will be announcing retirement shortly.

So Trump, after failing to respond to a pandemic and tanking our economy and doing as yet untold damage to our reputation abroad, gets to dangle 2 SCOTUS seats in front of conservatives to bring them in line to vote for him anyway.

That could also be a big motivation for Democrats as well. Vote Trump out and gain SC majority.

Ok .. so reading between the lines, if Trump dont get a second term, these justices will NOT retire?

Dammit! Con gets ticket punched to keep conning the masses
Yup, in many ways this spells the end of congressional oversight.

Even though the legal theories he was advancing are laughable, he will be able to delay complying with any congressional subpoenas for the entirety of the House’s term.

Not sure it is that dire. It punts it and the public does not see the info, but it does not end oversight. The ignoring of subpoenas are much worse than this ruling.

So I've seen many conflicting headlines, but in reading full articles (at least at CNN) this is getting kicked back to the lower courts?

How does that work since they've already ruled on it? Wouldn't that just repeat the whole process of lower court, higher court, even higher court, SCOTUS?

Trump v. Vance (NY State), in which the Court rejected Trump's claims of immunity from state grand jury proceedings.
The Court was unanimous in rejecting Trump's claims of absolute immunity, but split 5-2-2 on the proper standard to apply.

what does 5-2-2 mean?!
2 justices absented from voting?
which 2?

Whether he wins the election or loses. Either way, he is likely going to be forced to disclose his taxes/finances in upcoming investigations and indictments. I mean, unless the lower court does the unthinkable and grants him some sort of immunity. Right?

What I’m hoping it means is that New York will have grand jury indictments locked and loaded by Jan. 20, 2021. At 12:01pm that date Trump will be in Mar-a-Lago, where the FBI can pick him up for “Interstate flight to avoid prosecution.” Then drag his ass back to NYC. On commercial flight. Sitting him In coach.

How does it not end oversight? Future presidents have a playbook - invent ridiculous legal claims and draw things out in the courts. If you make it to the end of the House’s term or to your re-election before the courts force you to do anything, you win.

If the rumors are true that Alito and Thomas are going to retire:
Alito may be tired of everyone whispering "asshole" when he walks by.
Thomas is a big enough douche to try and leave to insure his favorite political party chooses his replacement.

Yep. This is why we need new laws which require that certain types of cases be expedited by the courts. Also laws which give more teeth to Congressional subpoenas.

We can do it. We just need to win in November, POTUS and Senate, then end the damn filibuster.

Once the Tax returns are revealed with all the line items from the Russians, fine, but the can of worms will remain open long after Trump leaves office... ;)
You guys want this to be legal precedent, live with it. There's an old saying; "be careful what you wish for." Eventually this will be far reaching and there goes some of our right to privacy. Some of you sure think it's a good idea to have the government more involved in our lives.

Derp State conspiracies.

I never figured any of this would be completely resolved before the election. OTOH, it's unfolding as it should be. NYS will get what they want. A new admin may simply give Congress what they want so that the SCOTUS can stay out of it, obviously where they want to be. If NYS finds evidence of tax fraud, they'll share it with the IRS. If Congress wants every scrap of paper from the Mueller investigation, they'll get it. SDNY already wants a piece of his ass over the pornstar payoffs. It'll be crying time for Donnie & some of his friends if he loses the election.

You know, Deep State persecution, man. Deep State. So what if he's a liar, a cheat, a thief & a con man? God wanted him to be President.

Freedumb fapping!

Remember that time crooked what's her name divulged her tax records going way, way back? The way she paid 30% in federal taxes & gave 10% to charity? Trumpsters preferred the much richer guy who said he didn't pay federal income taxes at all. I mean, he's obviously smarter, right?

Everyone voted.
5 affirmed, 2 affirmed with their own reasons, and two dissented.
