So I was on my way home from O'Hare today - more specifically, Northbound on Lee in Des plains - I'll explain why I'm being so specific - anyhow, the section of road that I was on was a one-way, three lane street. Then I saw a sign.

"Weight Limit 73,280lbs."

I would've taken a picture, but alas, no digital picture (hence, that's why I'm so specific on location for the nourthside Chicago-ers). But it begs the question, "on a one way, three lane road, just what in the hell could you be carrying that's 0ver 73, 280lbs.?" We figured it could be airplane parts, but on such a small road?

So, in the best ATOT-fashion, what do you think is the cause for that sign to be up?

Seriously though, did you know that Chicago is called the "windy city" because of its turn-of-the-century politicans and NOT becasue of the wind.

It is true. THey were bombastic idiots, hence the name. Jsut imgaine what hell the Chicago Worlds's fair spawned and that will give you a clue.

Also of importance, IIRC, the whole area is acutally not swampland but quicksand or some kind of seimentary sandish stuff. ANyways, this was one of the catalysts that forced engineers to use very deep shaft-like supports for their large strutures. Basically, they got skyscrapers to remain stable and balenced on SAND!!!!

Go figure that one out....pretty impressive stuff for the days when we used to take sh!ts in buckets

Don't forget that weight limit includes the vehicle itself. The odd number probably includes the typical weight of axles, etc.

Michigan vehicle gross weight limit is 164,000 pounds

Largest in the nation and now you know why our roads suck.

The odd number was probably established by someone lobbying that they couldn't conduct business without a vehicle weight of at least that amount.
