I was just there for an day or so, and my AT&T phone worked great with a strong signal wherever I was.

AT&T works great for me.
I'm in the NW suburbs and the reception is great. Never had a problem when I have been downtown (loop) on business.

The reception is far better than t-mobile (my blackberry is through them).

For the most part it's okay for me. Really just depends on where you are - some buildings will give you grief, but usually it works fine while you're outdoors.

define "heart of chicago"

Buildings depending on their construction can pose problems too, being usually made of lots of steel and concrete....

I've been wandering around Chicago and various suburbs for the last few days... the only time I ever lost reception is when I was in a lower level of Union Station... and even that depended on where I was standing.

Who is your current provider? I use AT&T and I'm generally okay with it. Some friends of mine swear up and down by Sprint though, but I see no need to change.

I live about 45 miles NW of the Chicago loop, I work about 25 miles NW of the loop. I used to live 25 miles due west of the loop. I've been pretty much all over the NW suburbs and I've never had any issues with my ATT Wireless when I am outside and above ground.

It does give me trouble in basements some of the time, but not as bad as my Ex (she has Verizon.)

That said, my grandparents live in the country in Door County, Wisconsin, and near their house, there is no signal until you get a bit closer to town....
