Chicago police shoot and kill family dog during chase



A south side family awoke to screaming and gunshots and found police in their yard and their family dog dead.


Officers opened the gate, covered with a Beware of Dog sign, then shot dead the 120 pound Italian Mastiff named Castro, who was outside at the time.


The investigation continues.

Hopefully they were chasing that person over something really important, like a sack of weed, some $10 crack rocks, a guy trying to buy himself a hooker, etc. You know, something totally worth all the collateral damage continually being inflicted by police.

seems to be that some go out of there way to shoot something. Dogs are a easy target and all they have to do is say it charged them.

there have even been reports of shooting dogs in crates.

Police really are dumb. Do they really think a criminal is going to run into the backyard of an Italian Mastiff and stick around? Unless the dog had the bad guy hiding in a corner, its likely he wouldn't stick around in the backyard.

And they found the bad guy in the fornt yard, not the back, so the dog was doing them a service keeping the bad guy out of the back.

Why risk getting bitten when you egress on a pet? Just open fire and your safety is assured.

Now it's not even safe to have your family dog in your yard... Lovely. Sucks for this family since all the cops can corroborate each others story about the dog charging at them.

Would the family even be able to sue the PD? Police invade their personal property with out any proper cause and wind up killing the dog. Civil suit for personal suffering?

Chasing someone isn't "cause" for invading your property, causing destruction, and shooting pets? Law probably says it is.

There have been reports like this coming from all around the country all year.

Something has happened big time that it certainly appears the Police forces of this country have declared war on the citizenry.

When Bush declared "War on Terror" he forgot to tell you it was Americans who are targeted.

There was a recent case in Utah (not even chasing someone, just searching for a lost kid). The officer was cleared, and the city offered $10K to try to make it go away, which the pet owner turned down. It'll be worth watching that case if the owner does eventually bring a civil suit against the PD and/or officer.

They'll call it exigent circumstances and clear the officer of wrongdoing. As they did in Utah.

Just wondering for my curiosities sake- say an officer was looking for a lost kid or chasing a bad guy who he can't locate and he enters your property with out warning and with out proper cause and he sees you doing something illegal... Can he legally arrest you on the spot? Or would that evidence not be able to be used in court since he entered your private residence with out your consent or knowledge.?

But it's only in plain view once he's in/on your property searching for something/someone else.

Oh well, this doesn't pertain to me personally, I just like to try and keep up with law that involves police so they can't pull a fast one on me if I have to interact with them.

Italian Mastiffs are very expensive dogs. It makes no sense to me that they would ignore the Beware of Dog signs posted all over the gated fence like that and then be surprised there is a dog in the backyard. This is negligence ineptness at its finest..

I swear I'm not one to usually pile on in the cop-hate threads, but at this point it's kind of a foregone conclusion that if you have a run-in with the police for any reason, your dog will be killed.
