I think it's ridiculous that they're following around normal people who are just trying to protect themselves.

I think forbidding handguns in Chicago is a gross infringement on the people's right to defend themselves.

I think that gun control is just a furtherance of Daley's corrupt socialist police state kingdom.

Since the handgun ban is a municipal law, it's only worth a fine or a couple days in jail.

The whole situation just boils my blood. Chicago is a cesspool. A drain on the rest of Illinois.

Nebor we get that you are big on the gun issue. But you are starting to rival the Ron Paul folks when it comes to overkill.

Do we really need a thread for EVERY gun related story that you find?

Is there a link to how many people are jailed in Chicago for defending themselves?

Should that include all those who are prevented from defending themselves, and are thus arrested for possessing a weapon?

Or maybe it's the lone woman out at night, who the authorities prevented from having a weapon due to overall policy and who is now raped/dead somewhere because she was defenseless. How does one really count the casualties of these policies?

Have you ever been to Chicago?

I live in the suburbs myself, and I don't like going into the city (too big and crowded IMO), but as a whole, it is clearly not a cesspool or a drain on the rest of the state.

I'm not denying that there are problems (corruption, gun laws, traffic, etc), but cesspool is quite the exaggeration.

That said, The unconstitutional handgun ban needs to be removed, and also Illinois needs to allow CCW, even if it is by permit only.

"When you see the number of the children and others who are being shot on the streets and you realize where these guns are coming from, we have to take a stand," he said.

The "stand" he referrs to ought to be allowing law-abiding Chicagoans to have guns and CCP's for self-protection.

Otherwise, closing down city-border suburban gun shops isn't gonna do squat. People will just drive farther to purchase their handgun.

Having lived in one and visited MANY central/southern IL towns I'd say that "cesspool" describes downstate a lot better than the Chicago metro area.

Granted that politically there are some f'd up things about Chicago (handgun ban being one of them).

It's an easy hop across the state line to IN too.

The "Handgun ban" in Chicago came about (at least in part) thanks to Jane Byrne and the usual sack of anti-handgun BS.

The short version is that Byrne & friends pushed for "registration" with the general press line being " I/We just can't understand why any LEGAL gun owner would have a problem registering ....{blah blah blah}"

Once that BS was accepted, and the law was passed for Chicago, she then cut off all registration ... even for folks that already were previously registered (as part of a volunteer program). No registration, no handguns.

It's this kind of disingenuous BS that causes firearm owners to get whipped up when the anti-gun folks start talking the "What's the problem with ....." programs.

Yeah, because if this debate needs something, it's more absolutist lunatics at the extremes of the issue

I live on the south side of Chicago, I'm not sure what to think of the ban. We had a student gunned down only a few weeks ago walking back to his apartment. It is much easier to look at the suburbs or the north side and ask why this ban exists. But the south side might be a better place for it. It allows the police a measure of safety, and it is rare for anyone to have a handgun.

I think that Chicago should allow hand guns but place restrictions on CCW. The rest of Illinois should be shall issue, but I don't think that public order would be helped by allowing everyone to carry where I live.

Only after he was caught in a crooked investment scheme that netted him millions, in which his father was an accomplice. Then he chooses to enlist and leave town, avoiding any prosecution. Yep, god bless him for all the right reasons.

Just because you don't know anyone that has a handgun doesn't mean people don't have them. If they're good guys, they're smart enough not to blab about something that could get them in trouble. If they're bad guys, well, they have plenty of guns anyway. Obviously the guy who shot that student didn't care about the handgun ban, because he needed to murder someone.

And having different laws for different areas within a state lead a cluster fuck situation where you never know if you're breaking the law or not as you pass through a couple of towns on the highway.

I'm suprised you're ok with the police having guns, since they seem to be involved directly in, or at least implicated in a lot of the violent crime in Chicago.

I'm aware of all this, I never said it would be easy. I read all the headlines over the summer about police abusing their power and through it all you'll notice that I support the rights of gun owners. There are times I would have felt safer had I been carrying my fathers Walter PPK. In the end I really do end up being pro CCW everywhere, its just that while on campus I know that most of my cohorts would never arm themselves and would be even easier targets for mugging/kidnaping etc. When push comes to shove, I feel safer carrying.

Oh, and police need to have weapons to police near our area. It can get pretty hairy.

Heh, I am surprised that you talk about solving the root of the problem with violent crime and not take guns away from people, but when it comes to police, you wanna take guns away from them and not solve the root of the problem. A little double standard here?

It was sarcasm. CPD needs serious reforms. The entire city government does.
