Chicago - Labor Day weekend

My GF and I are going on our first trip together. We'll be driving to Chicago to (a) visit my sister and drop off furniture for her. (b) Visit my GF's old roommate. (c) Buy furniture from Ikea.

What are some fun activities going on that weekend (ie anything special going on only around that time)? What should we see? What are romantic places to go?

To answer your other questions properly I'd have to know how much time you have and how much you are wanting to spend.

Chicago will be dead because the majority of them unfortunately migrate to Wisconsin Labor Day weekend.

top of my head:

1) "movie in the park" -- google it.. not sure what the dates are but its free..
2) millenium park
3) lincoln park zoo -- basically free
4) hang arround "wicker park"/buck town/"meat packing district" getting dinner/lunch while people watching..
5) go to the beach and hang @ Castaways --- ask people if you can play volleyball with them.. they usually don't mind.. there are some leagues so make sure its not organized in any way 🙂

We'd be there from Friday evening through Monday morning. That isn't much time, especially if you see all the stuff on my list. But we should have time to do one or two things just for fun. We both have good paying jobs (both chemical engineers with graduate degress), but we are both quite frugal and cheap. Anything over $50 probably will be out of the question.

My sister lives 2 minutes walk from the Lincoln Park Zoo. It is a nice stroll through the park, through the zoo, and down to the beach. I'll look into those other things.

The LP zoo is ok, you only need about an hour or a little better to see most of it.

Chicago has several world class museums:
Museum of Science and Industry (reccomended)
The Field Museum (has King Tut exhibit now)
Shedd Aquarium
Art Institute of Chicago

If you are staying there in LP. Take a stroll down to Wells St. There are a number of good restraunts and lots of people watching. If you are hungry go to Topo Gigio (A block south of North Ave. on Wells) and order their spaghetti and meatballs (the best you will EVER have). If you are interested in any other type of cusine let me know, I happen to eat in the area a lot.

There is always the other touristy stuff to see: N. Michigan Ave, Navy Pier, Mill. Park, Sears Tower/John Hancock, river boat tour (this is interesting actually), etc...

I've personally have been to all of those museums (although my GF has never been to Chicago and may like them), I was more interested in any special event that Chicago might have on those days or in local places that aren't tourist traps.

I will however look into Wells St. and the restaurants there. I'm in the mood for great Chicago style pizza. Is Geno's East the best, or is there better pizza around? We both like spicy food - Indian and Thai. Any good ones in the LP area?

Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, make sure you check out the planetarium while you're there too. It rocks. But your tickets online first though, so you don't have to wait in line. Also make sure you go to the newer imax-ish room instead of the one that doesn't have the projector w/ video feed. It's really neat.

The metromix link I posted above will have any special events that are happening in town. You are kind of getting here after the major ones (just had the Air and Water show last weekend).

For deep dish I personally like Giordano's over Gino's. There isn't much good Thai in LP IMO. If you are in downtown go to the Star of Siam as I hear good things.

For Indian food go to the Indian Grill. Good stuff.

If you have money and REALLY want good thai:

(Arun's Restaurant)

My cousin who is thai says its really good... never been... but everyone agrees that its good... Probably will go when I can find a date that I want to impress ;-P
