The problem I have with Wal-Mart is that they stamp out any movements to organized labor and import loads of cheap crap that could be made here and support the economy.

Oh boo-fscking-hoo. Two over-priced toy stores couldn't compete. That's what capitalism is all about.

FYI, KB Toys was it's own worst enemy. You cannot compete with discount stores if your primary presence is in malls.

As for FAO, their prices were simply ridiculious. As soon as people put their elitism aside, they realized they could get the same toys MUCH cheaper elsewhere.

Yep, it's amazing they don't teach the dangers of protectionism in school. Look up the Smoot-Hawley act, and learn how it was largely responsible for the Great Depression being as long and as bad as it was.

Good. (Maybe.)

Zoning laws are somehow illegal? (As is typical in TV news, the story barely scratches the surface, so which zoning regulations Wal-Mart is trying to bully its way through aren't even mentioned. What's the name of the main Chicago newspaper again? Maybe they have a better article.)

Wal-Mart is actually running up against some laws, and finding that they're not invincible. They're going to meet more and more opposition as they try to move deeper inside major cities. I could live without Wal-Mart, even though I do shop there sometimes because some stores are open all night long. I wish Target would try that around here sometime. They're easily still the better corporate citizen, and I never feel guilty about patronizing their stores.

I should have seen this coming...
I dislike Wal-Mart because they are the world's biggest offender IMO, when it comes to this. They're hurting the economy because they push manufacturing jobs out of the country in favor of minimum-wage stock and cashier positions. If you took an economics class you'd know that manufacturing requires machinery which must be manufactured, which creates jobs. Make more stuff here and you'll see the number of jobs go up, and then more people will have money to spend to boost the economy.

Either the Chicago Sun-Times or Chicago Tribune would have a better story, this was the first link on Google News :p.

Again then you have to hate every other store out there because they buy the same products that wal-mart has. Size dont really matter.

Yes manufacturing requires machinery. But makeing the products here in the US will increase the price of the products. But again wal-mart is NOT the only one buying the prducts. Safeway, target etc all are buying the same products.

Um, no. The products will cost more, thus dramtically raising the cost of living. We wont be any better off. In fact, the standard of living has only increased with the number of goods imported, not the other way around.

lol! First you assert that, by opening discount department stores which employ stock clerks and cashiers, Walmart 'pushes' manufacturing jobs out of the country, then you encourage others to take an economics class? WOW.

OK, give me an economics lesson. Pay for a class and I'll take it and pass with an A.

Then you'd think you would know enough about history to have learned that EVERY attempt at economic protectionism has failed miserably. Instead of protecting jobs it lowers the standard of living and causes spikes in unemployment. The best example being Smoot-Hawley.

Actually, no I won't be taking an economics class. Offer still stands, pay and I'll go.
