Chevy Volts piling up at dealers?

New tech is always expensive. The volt should have been positioned slightly upscale and modeled differently. The third or fourth gen will be much cheaper obviously.



While many mistakes were made I applaud their efforts. The tech will trickle down to other models over the next few years.

You do know the car also has a gas engine right? Maybe the probably with the volt is people have no clue what it is.

Damn I must have been confusing the leaf and volt. Volt in that case since it has a 9.3 gallon gas tank would work for a lot of people. Still though that comes out to around 35-37mpg which is right around cruze numbers.

I applaud GM's effort, but shake my head at the execution and delivery.

By all accounts it's a great car. Sporty dynamics for an electric, hybrid, whatever you want to call it. The gas cycle is quiet and well integrated with the powertrain. There is nothing wrong with the car except the price, and that's a function of the technology not the execution.

It boggles my mind that the Leaf is outselling the Volt. I guess the typical American consumer would rather have an import, even if it's uglier and is less usable.

I hope GM keeps up with the platform. It needs another generation or two to mature.

thats what im saying. how many years will it take to burn 25k in gas?

3 years in my truck. i run through 600ish a month in fuel for it. i bought a used car that gets 32ish mpg to save some cash, and overall it does save me. pretty much instantly. i spend 35 bucks to get 340 miles instead of 85 to get 300ish. it will pay itself off within a couple years at worst.

Too expensive compared to alternative penny pinchers like Prius or 40+MPG pure gas sippers like sonata. You can buy a lot of gas for $20,000.

Changed the style from cool to frumpy.

Real Americans (the ones who buy American) drive trucks.

Leaf is outselling the Volt because it's almost $10k cheaper. Also, the Leaf is a bit of a toy really but then so is the Volt (Buyers of both are paying a HUGE premium to be able to have any EV range at all) and if you're going half in you might as well go all the way with the Leaf, which gives you more than twice the EV range.

But the Leaf may also be more accessible; more of them made.

Try autotrader. Not sure how many are legit but there are two thousand available across the US if you select "any distance".

Volt owners, the few of them, indicate overwhelming satisfaction with their cars. Objectively it's a small four seater that has some half decent electric range and half-decent mileage on gas. And is overpriced by $10,000, IMO.

obviously, they paid 40k for the damn thing.

So are they just all used then...because Chevy's own website has no inventory available near me (area code 33301). Maybe that is why they are piling up...dealerships are "selling" them to get the federal tax credit and then trying to resell them for MSRP used.

I don't know. It's odd. Shows 40 new Volts within 50 miles of that zip.

Some are probably listed, but haven't yet arrived at the dealer.

Some of the pics are clearly the dealer's demo model with VOLT in big letters on the side.

I don't know how a dealer transfer works as far as calling a car new or used.

It list 33 used Volts for sale in the US total.

I saw an open 3 car garage. The first car was a black Porsche 911 Carrera S, the 2nd car was a white MB ML63 AMG, the third car was a silver Volt.

im actually looking for a new car but seeing as i drive 104 miles round trip every day for work there is no reason to get the volt over a cheaper gas only car like the focus or diesel jetta

actually i could almost get both for the cost of the volt

Saw a Volt for the first time ever today. It's actually not a bad looking car, for a hybrid.

Despite what I said about it, I do want to drive one. A hybrid/electric is one of the few things I haven't driven.

That is very weird that there is a discrepancy between chevy and cars.com. Is it possible that the dealerships are listing cars that are not actually on their lot to grab pre-orders/sell Cruzes? Makes no sense that Chevy would not be alerting customers of availability of new cars on the lots like they do every other car they sell. I smell fishy dealership handling.

It's absolutely the dealers playing games to get people to the dealership and try to sell them something else. Last time I was shopping for a car, it wasn't anything near as in demand as the Volt, and the first 2 dealerships I contacted didn't have the car they were advertising and tried to get me into something else which I had no interest in. Third dealership didn't either, but they ended up trucking in the car I wanted from another state.

Also with the Volt, Chevy as of May of this year, had shipped out 550 demo vehicles to dealers that were supposed to be used for test drives. The goal is reportedly 2600 by the end of the year. So there are a whole lot of Volts at dealerships that aren't really supposed to be for sale.

My old boss bought a Leaf as a corporate expense. And then installed solar panels on his house to charge the thing as a corporate expense. Youd have to be a fucking moron to buy a Volt, overpriced useless POS. They should change the logo to an Apple, then maybe idiots would buy it.

what does your boss buying "green" items and passing them off as corporate expenses have to do with the quality of the chevy volt? have you driven one? do you know anything about its engineering or how it works? do you understand its advantages and disadvantages over other conventional and alternative vehicles?
