chevy volt assembly line pics

It is interesting.

Just for grins, add up the investment costs for each facility listed. Makes one wonder how automakers make any money at all.

Imagine what it takes to design and engineer the vehicle to both be assembled, serviced and that meets federal mandates. Imagine what's involved in designing an assembly line that's 24 miles long.

Makes me laugh at those supercritical know-it-all's that think automotive manufacturing is easy.

"Wheels and tires are installed last. The wheels, with tires inflated to the proper pressure"

They are inflated to sidewall from the factory no wonder it gets good mpg, w00t!

I got a chance to walk through the Hamtramck Assembly Plant a dozen times or so. I've never seen this prototype area. The rest of the plant where normal assembly takes place is super clean and uncluttered.

I can't believe hardly anyone is wearing PPE, especially in press pics.
I'd swear safety glasses were mandatory, hardhats and safety shoes not. However this was 2005ish, maybe my memory is failing.

I took a college class that met in one of their classrooms, so I had to walk through the plant to get to the classroom. The area I had to walk through was final assembly. Not too many robots. IIRC they were building the STS.

It was quite a culture shock coming from a very dirty and loud parts producing plant.

Yeah final assembly is so nice compared to stamping and body weld haha. I'm sure safety glasses are mandatory. I thought about putting in an OSHA report, but I figure the workers cared one of them would.

LOL! That plant looks like a dungeon compared to those I have visited in Germany...Transparent Factory anyone?

We Americans are so second...third class.

Well, that explains why German cars are pricey.

Honestly, I don't care if the factory has floor to ceiling glass walls like that. In fact, I'd prefer it didn't. When I buy a car I want the money I pay to go into making a better car, not making some flashy factory.

You know that's just a big fucking waste of money right? VW and Audi still ranks consistently lowest in terms of reliability. Tell me if spending all this $$$ actually helps improve their car's reliability.

Check out your beloved Direct Injection from ze German Engineering. Ja. Schwarze Scheisse.

I never knew they had mechanical engineers that are females, and decent looking.

Plenty of females. Being an hourly guy that had the most knowledge over a certain process and knowing that I could manage to string a couple words together without looking stupid I'd continually get paired up with new engineers to the plant. They were my little puppy dogs following me around and soaking up all they could.

Where I worked it was so loud at times all communication was done at a yell six inches from someone's ear. Some of the females smelled damn good too.

It depends where you work. On a construction site, it's needed because nothing is automated and controls are all manual. As a result, you need to go all out on PPE. This is an enclosed work site that has some automation.

Based on having worked in an identical environment for a different company, I am certain that safety glasses are required. They'd be sued to oblivion if they weren't.

Oh please. I love German cars and I am very fond of my German co-workers (I work for a German company), but money spent on making a fancier plant does not automatically equal better products.

The plant is a techincal exercise in itself...with first class architecture to boot.

It might be a VW "halo" project but damn do we need more of those here to show the world we can still engineer something AND make it look good.

I think you would surprised by what the Hamtramck final assembly looks like. It is very spartan, clean, and well lit. The cars snake back and forth in ox cart pattern, but you could walk crosswise, crossing the assembly line, every 20 feet or so without any real effort.

Yes, which means they spent money on something that doesn't impact the quality of their product which does have some deficiencies.

I am guessing he is talking about the VW plant that builds the Phaeton. Haven't heard horror stories about that particular VW
