Chevy Impala 2001. Transmission Problems???

Hello,

I recently noticed that something was not right with my car. Everytime I would step on the accelerator to pass a vehicle the RPMs go up to about 4500 and then it just gets stuck there. Fine I thought A transmission filter and new fluid will do. New Fluid and New Filter = New Problems...

Fast Forward to three days later. I now accelerate and it goes to about 3000 RPM and then just hangs and goes down to about 2000 like it's got a clogged fuel filter or soemthing similiar... It bogs down and then I step on the gas a little mroe and then it goes???

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have already checked the fluid level and they look fine. Thaks

Put a small bottle of trans-x in it and see if that helps. If not sounds like the trans is slipping. Take it easy, no more hard take offs or hard passing.

If the trans-x does not "fix" it, then you are looking at having to have the trans rebuilt. Mind you it might go on for another 3 months or even a year liek this before it fully gives out.

Are you trying to say that when you depress the throttle to rapidly accelerate and the transmission "kicks down" to the lower gear (as it should), that it gets stuck in the lower gear and doesn't upshift as it should after you let off the throttle?

wow, already 4 informative posts and not a bad one.

but ITS A DOMESTIC OMG AIEEEE NOOOOO, no wonder it failed. it was made by gm!!!!

but on a serious note do what they said, and then take it to a WELL TRUSTED shop. some shops will say its the whole tranny, others will say its a computer problem or something else entirely.

Yes.. Exactly.

I have also tried adding Lucas Transmission Stuff to see if it unsticks it. that was 4 days ago and I've already put about 400 miles on it.

How much would it cost to have th tranny rebuilt?

Thanks

You need to have a good trusted mechanic look at it. It could be simple (like sticking linkage), or it could require a complete rebuild.

sounds like about the right time for cheap transmission to fail. transmission seems to be the most volnerable part these days. A rebuilt might cost you about 2 grand. Regular ATX fluid drain and refill and adding a transimission cooler are keys to longer transmission life.

Sounds like a bad tranny too. The thing is that I owe way to much money on this thing. 10500, on something that I will get 6500 as a trade in for.

Any ideas on that.?

Take it to a couple of transmission shops. They will diagnose it for free.

Simple.

Or not.

Who cares? :disgust:

Does the vehicle upshift hard like the transmission is going to explode? Just because there is a problem shifting don't pin it on the transmission. It could be a number of problems. The transmission is electronically controlled, so for example if there isn't enough fuel pressure to the engine the tranmission will NOT downshift and risk leaning out the engine at high RPMs. Before you rushed to change the tranny filter/fluid you should have taken it to be properly diagnosed if you don't know what you are doing.
