Chevy HHR LS?

Built on the Cobalt platform. The 2.4L engine gets pretty horrible mileage. The Turbo motor in the SS gets better MPG.

Overall its a good utilitarian wagon.

Other options:
Pontiac Vibe
Scion Xd or Xb - the box one built on the Matrix platform
Nissan Versa
Suzuki Sx4 (lowest priced AWD standard vehicle in Amercia)
Mazda 3 hatch

I think they look like a rolling pile of ass. Just being honest.

I'm married with a kid, I dont care what it looks like, I just want a reliable, safe car with decent storage capacity and good mileage

Or a Mazda6 🙂 Hatchback that is.
But seriously OP, I'd look into similar wagons. HHR's are nice too but you should check the car, run a test drive and do some comparisions with other vehicles.

You are paying for for the retro look more than anything. There are many better options out there if you don't care about looks or image.

I like them. Would have bought one over my PT Cruiser but no one around had one with the manual transmission.

I'm looking at one right now that is stickered for 20,375, I've never bought a new car other than my saturn which have fixed pricing, how much can I expect to talk them down? Anyone know what insurance rates are like on them?

An easy place to start is with Edmunds' TMV or carsdirect.com. Enter the equipment package and see what Edmunds says and carsdirect as well.

At a glance, carsdirect is showing a $500 rebate, and is offering the car at invoice price. It also says there is an additional $1000 rebate available if you have a qualifying GM car. So it sounds like there is room for negotiation. Carsdirect is always a good place to put your absolute max because you can always buy it from them at their price, meaning you can usually pay less at the dealer itself.

I've driven one as a rental. I hated it. Interior feels utterly cheap, and it has the worse visibility of any car i've ever driven. The performance wasn't too bad though.

I had one as a rental too. I have to stoop down at every stoplight so I could see it. It was ridiculous.

Well, I went ahead and bought the vehicle. To date it has a grand total of 30 miles on it. Color is cardinal red with metallic specks. Interior is ebony. Got the premium sound package, not sure of the specs, but it doesnt sound bad at all.

For the pricetag they carry I'd say pick up a 2008 malibu. It's really an amaizing car for the price. I've a 2005 impala and I was utterly un-impressed with the re-design they did on the impalas but, the malibu, though not that attractive is really a well built car and if you take it easy on the right pedal they get good gas mileage.

I'm not personally a fan of the styling, but this is a car you'll buy because you like the way it looks above all else. So if you like it, go ahead and buy it.

I have rented them a few times. I liked them for functionality. I was able to transport a ton of computer equipment between offices. I don't like trucks too much, esp when in totally new areas. My DD is a small car and very low to the ground...the change of perspective is not comfortable. While the HHR is definitely higher, it's not that much bigger in size...the cargo room is fantastic though with the rear seats folded down.

The one thing I hated is the map lights are too forward on the dash...you don't get enough light where you'd read a map. I discovered this when the airport dude forgot to mention the last turn off prior to entering the desert (Arizona)...I had to go get my knife with light out of my bag once I realized I could only see the city lights I just left on the horizon and the new city lights on the other horizon and nothing to the other two sides. There was no turn around as between both roads was rocks... I found a road that looped back around finally on the map a few miles ahead.

Mileage seemed good, the car wasn't really lacking on power feel either. I drove a PT Cruiser before and it dragged with a manual trans.

Not a real long term test, but I rented them 4 times now and will probably pick it again.

I have to admit, I really like the panel version Chevrolet sells, visibility is supposed to suck balls, but I'll bet a couple of rear view cameras would fix that. (I've always had a soft spot for panels)

HHR panel

I like the HHR I almost bought one last year, I wanted the LT with the 2.4 at the base LS price..... This might be my next new (used) car.

What did you end up paying?
