= little leg room, back breaker.

I'm 6'3 250, and got an Equinox as a rental for a 5 hour drive to and fro Chicago.

What a horribly unconformable car. I wanted to like it, but just couldn't!

I just sat in one yesterday that my F.i.L. just purchased. He traded in an '08 Chevy Avalanche on it, paying around 4k out of pocket for it. What he liked was a full warranty and better gas mileage than the V8 he had. One or two major repairs on the Avalanche would be getting in the ballpark of the price he paid out of pocket for the Equinox, so it was a no-brainer for him.

He had looked at a Ford Escape as well, but found it had even less legroom than the Equinox. I'm 6-3, so I sat in he Equinox, and found it to have ample legroom up front for me. He had also looked at both a Forester and an Outback as well, but found that neither was optioned and available with what he wanted.

The 4 banger offers only 15 less HP than my Kia's 6, and in the past we needed that Avalanche's V8 to haul a heavy trailer and 2 ATVs, but with our riding group downsizing to single trailers for ATV rides, its every man for himself to get his ATV to the ride area. Hauling a pair of ATVs up the mountainside tends to empty a gas tank in a hurry.

I asked him whether he had considered the larger Traverse, but it was just too big of a vehicle for this transition/downsizing for him. Gas mileage on the Traverse was also bad enough to make him go with the Equinox/4 banger option.

^I agree about no leg room in the Escape, and Fords in general. They have gone all-in with the huge center consoles that extend to the dash, and really thick door panels that stick out a good ways from the door. If you have long legs, you have little to no room in any Ford truck or SUV.

They're great for shorter people, but I'm 6'4" and prefer to be able to spread my legs out a little.
