I bought a new 1989 Cavalier after high school, plain model with IIRC a 2.0 Liter. Worst car I ever owned, without question. I sold it to a junk yard six years later for $300.
The radiator or heater core (I forget which) rotted out at 60,000 miles, dumped all my antifreeze on the highway. Thank goodness my check engine/temperature light came on...long after the damage was done. The engine overheated and warped the aluminum head, I had to have the upper-end rebuilt when the car was only 30 months years old - out of warranty.
The shop tried to find a new or remanufactured GM head for three days, called every US supplier they knew of, who then called all their contacts. There was not a single new or remanufactured aluminum head for that engine in the entire United States of America and all suppliers were given an ETA of two months by GM and its suppliers. Meaning, there were so many Cavalier owners replacing that head that GM couldn't build them fast enough. So I had to have the damned thing milled and rebuilt. It never ran the same again.
I worked with a guy who owned the exact same car - same year and engine. He put 200,000 miles on it without so much as changing the freaking spark plugs or getting a tune up. Just changed the oil a couple times per year.
Go figure.
